Blind Priest Fr Francis Ching And His Inspiring Ministry

This article shares the story of Fr Francis Ching, a legally blind Catholic priest from Ottawa, Canada, who uses an iPad and text-to-speech technology to celebrate Mass and pray the Liturgy of the Hours. After losing his ability to read in 2009 due to glaucoma, he began relying on apps like iBreviary and an earbud to hear and repeat the prayers.

Born in Hong Kong and later moving to Canada, Fr Francis gradually lost his sight but never his vocation. He continues an active priestly ministry through evangelization, retreats, music, and service to Chinese Catholic communities around the world, including Australia.

With a deep devotion to Mary, Fr Francis accepts blindness as his “new normal” and a grace from God. His life is a powerful witness that disability does not hinder God’s work: “I lost my ability to read, but I can do everything I did before. Nothing is lost.”
