Last week I returned 2 clients to work.

Client 1 works in childcare has sustained a lower back injury. After 10 weeks on suitable duties, regular Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology and attention to manual handling techniques my client is back to full time work.

Client 2 works in agriculture and also had a lower back injury. My client required a new role that didn't involve so much bending and twisting. Host emoyment, a vocational assessment and job prep services such as a nice new resume, cover letter and job seeking support, set my client up for his new role.

Today I have successfully placed two of my clients in host employment.

Client 1 required a workplace that could offer flexible hours and minimal manual handling. My client sustained a neck injury requiring surgery and can not lift or carry loads greater than 5kg. My client will be supporting her host employer with COVID cleaning and assisting lifestyle programs in disability support starting at 9 hours per week.

Client 2 required a work place that could offer flexible hours with minimal customer contact. My client as no physical limitations but has post traumatic stress following a workplace incident. My client requires a gradual reintroduction to a low stress work environment. She is now assisting the host employer stocking shelves and stock take duties starting at 9 hours per week.

Can anyone guess where I am?

Rural workplace assessments are one of my favourite parts about my job now. The change of scenery is almost as good as a holiday.

The purpose of a workplace assessment is to determine if a workplace can provide suitable duties. This is entirely dependent on the workers injury, current capacity and medical restrictions.

If you're thinking of being a host employer, my first step is to match the right worker to your business. Then we conduct a workplace assessment to confirm that the duties are suitable to the worker.

To all the great dads out there, past, present and future.

*I had to edit to add my favourite fathers day message today from a criminal and paediatric psychologist (great combo huh!!!) called Nigel Latta. Nigel is also father to three boys (if I remember correctly) and author of a brilliant book called 'Politically Incorrect Parenting'.

Here is what Nigel wrote about fathers day, which I hope resonates well with those fathers who can't be with their kids today.

"Here's the thing about Father's Day...

This is the first Fathers Day in 21 years where I'm away from both my guys... and it made me think.

Father's day isn't really about the hand drawn cards, or the hand made presents (or the bought ones), or the breakfasts in beds.

It's really about two things:

One, you get to do whatever the hell you want if you're a dad because it's your day. So there's that.

And two, father's day is really about spending a moment reflecting on what an enormous privilege and joy it is to get to be part of your kids lives. To watch them come into the world, and grow, and learn, and find their passions, and face their fears, and travel their own roads through the trials and triumphs of their own lives. There is no greater gift that that.

Three good reasons to become a host employer:

1. Fill a short-term gap to boost productivity. You may have a lot of light work coming up but not enough staff.

2. If you’re ultimately looking for new staff, being a host employer is a great way to connect with skilled local workers.

3. A host employment period can last as little as 3 weeks and can serve as an obligation free way to determine their suitability to your business.

Early intervention is key to stopping your ni**les from becoming full blown injuries. Listen to your body and take note.

Here are three ways you can nip a ni**le in the bud:

πŸ’ͺ Move often - if you're an office worker take time away from your computer to walk and strengthen target muscle groups that weaken while you're hunched over your computer.

🦡 If you work on your feet all day, your movement needs to be gentle stretching movements like yoga at the end of the day.

πŸ–₯️ Pay attention to your ergonomics. Do your elbows rest at 90 - 100 degrees while you type? Is the top of your monitor at eye level? Is the lumbar support in your chair supporting your lumbar spine or your gluteus maximus?
