First-year medical student post !!!

With our first-ever mid-semester exams coming up this Monday, we have some very special people we would like to thank for all their help with our preparations.

Firstly, critical care paramedic Wendy, for taking time out of her day to teach us about managing severe burn cases — it was so engaging, eye-opening, and clinically grounded. We definitely have that part of our test covered now, thank you !

Next, a huge thank you to Dr Susan Dragone for being the best lectorial tutor we could ever ask for. We are all so amazed by your knowledge and absolutely love working through clinical cases with you.
(P.S. A very big thank you for coming in on the Show Holiday to teach us everything about haematology !)

Next, Dr Shelley Verma. Pathology is something many of us find particularly challenging, and it took us a little while to find our feet. We can’t thank you enough for your pathology masterclass — the skills and experience you shared will set us up not only for this test, but for the years to come. Thank you so so much.

Next, Dr Miles Brodie. We can’t wait for you to come back again. We felt so inspired after our first session with you and are so grateful to have such a knowledgeable clinician in our circle.

Next, a huge thank you to our tutors, Paul and Mel. All of your tips and tricks are going to come in handy on Monday :))

Finally, the biggest thank you to the RMEA staff for finding all of these incredible people to help us through our first trimester of Medicine - we feel so privileged.

Wishing everyone all the luck in the world !

!! First Year MD Student Post !! :))

What does poker have in common with Clinical Reasoning ?!

A lot more than we could have ever expected.

In between our normal day-to-day classes, we were all unexpectedly but pleasantly surprised when our teaching staff invited us to sit around a table and play a game. What followed were lots of laughs, some impressive bluffs, and interestingly, insight into how some of the best clinicians actually think.

Some of us won big 🌟 ! … others not so much. Upon reflection, we found that poker truely exposes cognitive biases like overconfidence, chasing losses and seeing pattens that aren't quite there... When drawing the links, we found that clinical reasoning has similar pitfalls, like anchoring bias - where someone can put too much emphasis on the first piece of evidence, or then, confirmation bias - ordering test after test, looking to confirm this hypothesis. The lesson? Stay open-minded. Reassess. And sometimes, know when to fold and try a different route.

What also became apparent is that in the real world (unlike the tidy case studies we see in the first couple of weeks of medical school 😅) clinicians have to work under, and make important decisions with a lot of uncertainty.

Midway through the poker rounds, Anthony changed the rules, increasing the uncertainty and seeing how that would impact our decision making. Were we more cautious ? Did we make bigger calls ?

Suddenly, the risk management thinking required of a clinician became more clear - how do you weigh the benefits, harm, and uncertainty with each decision and recommendation you make, when you don’t have the full hand ?

What was a fun game also turned into a lot more — avoiding cognitive biases and managing risk under uncertainty were only two of many lessons we drew about clinical reasoning.

A big thanks to Rob, Anthony and the other RMEA staff for making our week that little bit brighter ! 🌟🌞

(P.S. I hope the lessons I wrote down are what you were trying to teach us!)

🌿 Looking for something to do in Toowoomba this weekend? 🌿

There’s plenty happening at Queens Park:
🛍️ Saturday morning — the Farmers Market under the big windmills at the Cobb & Co museum, with fresh produce, great food and market stalls.
🎶 Sunday — Markets in Queens Park, featuring live music, delicious food and plenty of stalls to explore.

A great way to spend the weekend supporting local producers and enjoying the sunshine.
