You can be forgiven if you have never heard of pregnenolone. However, it’s a really important hormone. All steroid hormones including oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol are made from cholesterol. Pregnenolone is the first step in the conversion of cholesterol to steroid hormones. It’s often referred to as the master hormone or the mother of all hormones. We used to think it was only made in the adrenal glands or in the ovaries or testicles but, in fact, it’s made throughout the body and particularly in the brain. It’s the precursor to a group of hormones in the brain called neurosteroids. These control brain development and remodelling, decrease inflammation and increase neurotransmitter levels. A supplement prepared from the root of Rhodiola rosea, a flowering herb that grows in cold, mountainous regions of Europe, Asia and North America. It’s sometimes called golden root or arctic root. It has well over 100 potentially active ingredients but the major ones are rosavins and salidrosides. These two groups of compounds are glycosides – organic compounds that consist of sugar bound to phenolic or other complex lipid-soluble molecules. Rhodiola was almost certainly used by the Vikings to improve physical strength and stamina. To read more, click the link in our bio!

A water-soluble vitamin that our body can’t make. We need to get it from food or from supplements. Also known as ascorbic acid or L-ascorbate, it’s one of the most powerful antioxidants we have. Important for collagen production, wound healing, and for effective function of the immune system. Also important in production of L-carnitine, which we need for energy production. The daily requirement for a man is 90 mg and for a woman is 75 mg. To read more, click the link below!

Turmeric is the root of Curcuma longa, a flowering plant and a member of the ginger family that grows in tropical and subtropical climates. It’s important in several Asian cuisines and helps to give curries their delicious flavour and yellow/orange colour. The main active medically active component of turmeric is curcumin, a polyphenol that gives turmeric its yellow colour.

Turmeric has been used as food and medicine for more than 4,000 years. Curcumin is a powerful anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-infective, but it’s not the only active component of turmeric. The vast majority of the world’s turmeric is grown in India and Indians consume more than 80% of it! To read more, click the link below!

Our Story

Gordian Health was founded by Fiona and Lee Kennedy five years ago. We saw a need for a new approach to helping our clients with their health and fitness. We wanted to make use of our training and experience in nursing, medicine, fitness, nutrition and project management. Our approach is client centred and enabling. Evidence-based wherever possible and integrative – using knowledge that cuts across many disciplines. It is not just about the two of us trying to help you get the best of your health. It is about working with other partitioners who are also trying to help you and about introducing you to our associates when we think that they may be able to help you.

Why Gordian? Alexander the Great (356 – 323 BC) was one of the most powerful people in history. In 333 BC he entered the town of Gordium in Anatolia. There, he found a cart tied to a column. The knot in the rope was extremely complex with twist and turns that had no beginning and no end. Legend had it that whoever could undo the knot would rule all of Asia. Alexander studied the knot, drew his sword and cut right through it. The rest is history! Cutting the Gordian knot has come to mean adopting a bold approach to problem solving. And that is exactly what we try to do at Gordian Health.
