I hear this a lot, often from mums in those blurry early days, where the feeds are long, the nights are short, and your body and brain feel like they’re in two different places.

Here’s the truth:

Breastfeeding tends to get easier little by little, feed by feed, often sometime in the first few weeks.

At first, it can feel like a full-time job and to be fair, it is.

There’s the latch, the position, the cluster feeds, the cracked ni***es, the hormones, the self-doubt, and all the questions in your head at 2am.
But slowly, something shifts.

Baby starts to feed more efficiently.

You start to read their cues more clearly.

Your supply regulates.

Your confidence builds.

And one day, sometimes without even realising it — you’ve found your rhythm.
It doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t look the same for everyone.

But it does get easier.

And if it doesn’t feel like it’s getting easier? That’s your sign to reach out.

I’m an IBCLC and midwife, I’m here to support you, not just with encouragement, but with real solutions that help you feel steadier, sooner.

Your baby’s stomach is in bloom, just like they are.

In the beginning, it’s small. Day one, it’s about the size of a cherry.

By one week, more like a walnut. By one month, the size of a large egg. This is why newborns feed so often, not because something is wrong, but because everything is working exactly as it should.

Tiny tummies need tiny feeds, again and again. Each one helps your baby grow. Helps your supply establish.

Helps you both find your rhythm. You’re not spoiling them. You’re responding to them. And together, you’re both growing, one quiet feed at a time.

If you’re experiencing pain, baby isn’t settling after feeds, or something just feels off, reach out.

An IBCLC appointment can make a real difference.

Back in Alice Springs a year later.

Waiting in the space that is best relinquished to the unknown.

So cool that I can revisit some Alice Springs places that were just whistle stops last time.

This afternoon, as the sun went down I walked the Bradfield Track and the Trig Track at the Telegraph Station. 🥰

It’s been an amazing few weeks. Resting, learning and connecting 🤎

The last few days have been immersion in different landscapes, Nitmiluk and Litchfield National Parks. Calming and rejuvenating experiences made possible by disconnection from the busy to just being. It’s been so lovely to see the different plants and their detail without being instructed. Just having time to stop while walking by and take a closer look has been a delight.

And lots of swimming.
No … not sick of waterfalls yet.

And then a first.
My first Park Run in Darwin!

The last few days have been the build up towards quality time with my sisterhood.

Private midwifery might look like a lonely enterprise from the outside. That’s far, far from the reality.

We are a sisterhood of connected hearts and minds despite the vast distances between us. Our love for and  service of women transcends our age, professional journeys, and locations, even sometimes context of practice.

My dear friend and colleague Claire and I not so sneakily celebrated a significant achievement 🤫. Claire provided the venue and I provided the fireworks. 😆😆😆

THEN I got to experience the Motherhood by Midwives in Darwin. Oh how I’d love to replicate this in Townsville!

To the men who hold space in birth rooms, support throughout the night without being asked, and quietly carry the weight of becoming, or becoming again, a father.

To those who walk alongside with strength, softness, and steadiness.

To those learning as they go.

To those showing up, even when they’re not sure how.

To those who hold their partners with care, and their babies with awe.

Fatherhood doesn’t always look loud, but it matters deeply.

Today we honour the dads, partners, and co-parents who give so much in ways that often go unseen.

We see you. We value you. And we’re grateful for the love you bring to the room.

Happy Fathers Day 🤎

Highlights this week were many images of women in the rock art. 😍

Alkayhko fire woman - pronounce t Al-kuy-ko the fire woman, is one of the First People or Nayuhyungki who created the world.

She planted the yellow banksias in the woodlands and used their smouldering flowers to carry fire.

Stories about Alkayhko tell how she hunted rock possum, her favourite food, with the help of the dingoes which travelled with her.

People are afraid of Alkayhko because she kills and burns people, and they should avoid her Djang (sacred site) on the Arnhem Land Plateau where her spirit lives.

Notice Alkayhko’s four arms, and the banksias attached to her head.

Anbangbang Gallery

Rock art was painted to illustrate an aspect of a story. This may, be a creation story, a hunting experience, or some other aspect of life. If you were not there when a painting was done it is hard to know exactly what the story is. Some rock art stories are not for everyone to see.

Aboriginal people have provided the following information about this art:

Namarrkon the Lightning man. Barginj is Namarrkon’s wife. She and Namarkon are parents to Alyurr or the Leichhardt’s grasshopper which appear as the first storms break.

Namarndolg and his sister broke the kinship avoidance laws on the rock ledge above this gallery. He later became the Kinga (saltwater crocodile and she became a Rainbow Serpent.

In Aboriginal culture the kinship laws determine how clans and family relationships are organised. These laws extend to members of the same family and to community members within the same cultural responsibility and relationships.

Family groups of men and women on their way to a ceremony.

Flecks on the breasts of the two women on the right indicate they are breast feeding children.

The saratoga fish, is a popular food fished from the waterways nearby.

This is a truly amazing experience and definitely just what I needed 🥰🥰

The more you prepare now, the more supported you’ll feel later.
Those early days after birth are tender, raw, and real and setting up care for yourself ahead of time can make all the difference.

Here are a few ways you can support your postpartum self before the birth:
• Set up a recovery station with items you’ll truly reach for
• Stock your freezer with nourishing meals (your future self will thank you)
• Get solid, evidence-based education on what to expect
• Line up your support people for practical help
• Visit .au for everything from peri sprays to breast pads, lactation cookies to hireable resources

You don’t need to do this alone and you’re not meant to.

Let’s make sure your care doesn’t stop at the birth.

Travelling through Arnhem Country has been nothing short of humbling.

This rock art was extraordinary, layered with story, place, and time.

The highlight was the depiction of Yingarna, a woman said to have come from East Timor, carrying her dilly bags and casting culture, skin, and language as she moved across the lands of Arnhem.

What a powerful reminder of how deeply women have carried knowledge, tradition, and transformation, long before us, and long after.

Another day ready to explore - MG 🤎

Midwife prescribing 🖊️

And yes, those are holiday nails 💅 you see.

Midwives now have access to a “prescriber bag” which allows free PBS access to a very limited number of drugs for emergencies.

Now my stock of local anaesthetic comes without charge.

Lots of midwives in private practice supporting birth at home would love to see a bundle of drugs commonly used for heavy bleeding after birth on that list.

Until then we will keep buying them ourselves and keeping them in our kit. Heavy bleeding after birth is rarer in the home setting compared to in hospital.

We are prepared always with the skills, drugs and equipment needed. 🤎

You might imagine your baby feeding in evenly spaced intervals, three-hour blocks, tidy naps in between.

But many parents find themselves asking: “Didn’t we just feed…?”

The truth? Some feeds are close together. Some are longer, others shorter.

Especially in the evenings, your baby might want to feed every 20–30 minutes and that’s not a sign something’s wrong.

It’s called cluster feeding, and it’s one of the ways your baby:

🤎 Builds your milk supply
🤎 Grows through important developmental phases (especially around 2–3 weeks and 6 weeks)
🤎 Feeds not just for hunger, but for comfort, connection, and regulation

Some days, It can be tiring, yes. But it’s also temporary and purposeful.

You’re doing it right. And your baby knows it. But if you’re ever worried, please reach out for Breastfeeding support and together, we can chat about your experience and provide the support you need.

Post-birth recovery is tender.

That perineal area does a lot of work during birth, and in the days that follow, it often feels swollen, sore, or bruised.

A cold, soft maternity pad can make a world of difference and it doesn’t take much to make them yourself.

You can keep it simple with just a chilled pad.

Or, you can add a few traditional touches like witch hazel, aloe vera, and a little lavender, for extra comfort.

These additions have been used for generations. They may help with swelling and discomfort, and while formal evidence is limited, many women find them incredibly soothing.

If you’re prepping for birth, this is a gentle little task to tick off your list.

Steps:
- mix equal parts witch hazel & aloe
- 2-3 drops of lavender
- open pad (but don’t remove entirely from package
- spread mixture across pad and fold back up!
- store in clip-seal bag and freeze

Your postpartum self will thank you. Send this to a mama friend who needs to save it 🤎
