Rainbow Flock Speech Therapy:

Rainbow - represents my love for all things diversity. Flock - relates to my approach of working collaboratively with clients and their families or carers, to achieve outcomes. I work with clients up to the end of primary school in the areas of literacy (reading, spelling, writing), oral language, and speech sound disorders. I am committed to working in a neurodiversity affirming approach when working neurodivergent clients, and I always seek to reflect on my practice and find ways to improve. My service is mobile based, providing sessions in the home setting.

I just discovered the 'What's Going on in This Picture' activity from the NY Times and I love the idea. Not sure I'll ever make it to the online moderated event as it's 1-6am our time, but I'm super keen to try using this activity with clients and my daughter.

Intriguing Times images stripped of their captions — and an invitation to students to discuss them live.

This article focuses on Frances McCafferty, who is someone I have the privilege of knowing. Words cannot do justice to how amazing Frances is and the importance of the work that she does.

Speech Pathology Australia's 2024 Book of the Year Award winners have been announced. A list of the shortlisted books is also available, as well as a list of winners from previous years.

'The Book of the Year Awards are judged by a panel of Certified Practising Speech Pathologists with specific knowledge and skill in children's language and literacy development. Each nominated book is judged on its appeal to children, interactive quality and ability to assist speech pathologists and parents in facilitating the development of communication and literacy in children.'

Literacy is based on good oral language skills. The Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards aim to promote quality Australian books that help children get the best, most literate start in life.

A good source for low demand parenting information and a 50% discount code for the next week!

Almost two years ago, Eliza Fricker Missing The Mark and I were drinking coffee in a café in Hove, and talking about future plans. Whenever Eliza and I get together, we can’t stop thinking of new ideas. Sometimes I have to tell her to stop talking just because I don’t have the capacity to do all the fantastic new projects before finishing the last ones. We had the idea of doing some webinars together which would combine her art and lived experience with my psychology and professional experience – and the Art of Low Demand Parenting was born.

In the year since then, we have done a webinar every month, and a few bonus ones. Eliza has drawn well over two hundred illustrations which show the humorous side of living in low demand families. Thousands of people have come to our webinars and we have been touched by the feedback. Our book, When the Naughty Step Makes Things Worse, came out last week.

For this week, we’re making all of our recordings available half price. That’s ten webinars so far. We’ve covered the subjects you told us were important – communication, behaviour, emotions, and then hot topics like screens and dealing with other people. We’ve adapted as we went along according to what you told us was most useful.

You can get them half price for the next week only by entering the code LOWDEMAND50OFF. Go to my website to check them out. https://naomifisher.co.uk/courses/ -demand-parenting

Please share if you know parents who might benefit.

I'm looking at what the research says about the best ways to support children's school readiness and creating handouts to summarise the information. Here is the first handout on Print Awareness, which is the first pre-literacy skill that children develop.
Print Awareness is important because it is a predictor of future of future reading success. Happily, adults can foster Print Awareness during shared book reading and everyday situations.

Cheap, common game. Good language & executive function based concepts that can be taught while having fun playing:
- vertical / columns. This concept is important in lots of situations but in particular it’s essential to learn the maths concept of 10s vs 100s vs 1000s, as well as long division & multiplication.
- horizontal / rows / across
- diagonal
- shifting attention between your own pieces to monitor the opponent’s pieces
Adults - talk out loud about your thinking process as you play, to teach your child language concepts & executive function skills. “I’m thinking about connecting another one of my counters vertically (as you point to the 2 counters already lined up vertically). That helps my plan to have 4 counters in a line.”
