With an internal courtyard garden and fountain as its central hub, Raffles in Tweed Heads South is a relaxing and social community. Raffles is inspired by the lush tropical haven of Singapore’s Raffles Hotel. Residents here enjoy tending our Japanese garden and raised vegetable beds, or meandering along the paths that wind through our abundant tropical grounds. On this day in 1926 we opened Melbourne’s first after care home to provide transitional care for people of all ages after a hospital stay. MDNS President Jessie Henderson described the hospital as “a new expression of an old need”. Today, we’re still finding new ways to meet community needs, from our parenting, birth and baby telephone helpline to telehealth, home and community support and in our retirement villages and aged care homes.

Monday, 24 September 1945 – 80 years ago today – Queensland Governor Sir Leslie Orme Wilson officially opened the Kenmore Repatriation Sanatorium on the site of what is now Bolton Clarke Fairview, Pinjarra Hills. The first 12 veteran patients had been in residence in August under the watchful eyes of medical superintendent Dr George Cherry and Matron Viola Everett from the 112 Australian General Base Hospital. The sanatorium was founded to support ex-service personnel suffering from tuberculosis and continued to serve the veteran community until its closure in 1994.
