Did you see my post yesterday?

Well following on from that, I thought I’d share something that I’m trying to do atm.

I’ve been trying to get back into running.

I’ve tried 3 times in the last month to get past the first week on the couch to 5k app. Today was my second run of the “first” week and I managed to run my quickest time of the month.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to make it to week two next week, but if I don’t I’ll just try again.

Can you imagine if I’d just stopped after my first try to get back into running?

I wouldn’t have run my fastest time tonight, I would have missed out on some beautiful runs and I would have wondered what could have been if I’d tried again!

I’m sharing because I know you’re trying to succeed at something right now, big or small and I want to remind you that you can do it! It might take a few tries but THATS OK!

I’d love for you to comment below what you are trying to do at the moment! I can’t wait to read them 🌻🌻

Ok! Ok! I know it's a little bit clichéd but this is something that's been on my mind a lot today.

You know that situation where you set yourself a goal but when you tried to achieve it, things didn't work out the way you wanted? I've been there. A lot.

My question for you is .... what do you do next?

I ENCOURAGE YOU TO GIVE THINGS ANOTHER GO!

There's no shame in trying again!

I actually think it's pretty damn cool!

If you're like me and think this is an important message, give it a share! 🌻🌻🌻

Hey, I couldn’t have done this without you and your support!

This arvo I hit 500 followers on my page and I’m so stoked!

has been such a big learning curve for me and it’s safe to say I’m really enjoying it.

Over the last few days since my return to the gram I’ve had some great conversations with some of my followers, I’ve felt so connected and been so touched by all your support!

Something I’ve been doing the last year or so is making time to celebrate my little wins or everyday successes and I’m so bloody proud of myself for hitting 500 followers!

I made some gluten free vanilla cupcakes to celebrate! Vanilla it’s my bfs fave flavour and my sister is gluten free so this sweet treat is the perfect celebratory snack because I couldn’t have done this without either of them 🥰🥰

I’d love for you to share this account with your friends or family to help build this wonderful little community we‘be got going!

Thanks again!

Well, hello there.

I’ve been taking a little break from Instagram, and it’s been a whole month since I last posted. But I’m back now and ready to get into it!

Now more than ever seems like a great time to reintroduce myself.

My name is Mel and I’m the person behind the Nutrition by Mel Instagram account and business.

I finished a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Bioscience last year and now I am studying post grad medicine.

On a more personal note, I have a cat named Edith that my partner and I adopted over 2 years ago, and I am low key obsessed with her.

I’m excited for it to warm up a bit and be summer here in Perth because I’m a keen bean for a dip in the ocean.

I love a good café style breakfast and avo on toast or waffles is my kind of order.

Lastly, I know my break from Instagram was what I needed because I’m feeling a lot more inspired and lot more prepared for what’s to come now.

Read that again.

9/10 is a lot isn’t it?

I can understand why it’s so high though.

Finding ways to eat vegetables can be really tricky for some people. Others struggle to know how to cook them in a way that they will enjoy. And then there’s the times when fresh veggies end up sitting in the fridge forgotten to be used. Any of that sound familiar to you?

This is something that I took a little while to learn. Every body is unique and every body will respond a little differently to food and exercise.

This is why I am such an advocate for treating individuals as individuals and not subscribing to a one size fits all approach.

Gove this post a share with someone who might need to read this 💜

WHAT FIRST CAME TO MIND WHEN YOU READ THIS QUOTE?

Do you have a list of "good" or "bad" foods in your life?

It's really common.

I hear these words all the time when talking about food to clients, friends and family. When these words are used, they can have a negative impact on our relationship with food.

Through my education, I know that some foods are more suitable for certain purposes and for certain people but this still doesn't make these foods "good" or "bad".

As a nutritionist, I see it as my job to remind you of this and to encourage you to not use words like "good" or "bad" when discussing food to maintain a positive relationship with it.

Challenging beliefs or old thought patterns take time .... so save this post to keep it as a reminder for a day you might need it 💜

YES OR NO?

I ask all of my clients this question and almost all of them are surprised I ask it.

In today's culture, I think it is far too common for people to not be enjoying what they are eating.

A classic example is eating brown rice, chicken and broccoli because you are on a new health kick OR not eating the foods you enjoy because they aren't deemed “healthy enough”.

I think it is important we enjoy what we eat and so I make it a priority to ask my clients.

If someone answers yes, it gives me good information about the kinds of foods the person likes and are therefore important to keep in their diet.

If someone answers no, it gives me an opportunity to ask why they choose the foods they do. We can also chat about why they aren't choosing the foods they do enjoy eating. All of which is very important.

I'd love to know a food you ENJOY eating - comment below 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

ITS TIME TO BUST A NUTRITION MYTH!

Have you ever wondered if canned food is a healthy? Or have you ever heard the nutrition myth that fresh is always best?

I am here to tell you that canned foods can ABSOLUTELY be part of a balanced diet … in fact I think most people could benefit from a can or two being added to their weekly shop!

Some reasons I love canned foods include:
» they are super affordable
» they can be stored in the pantry
» they don’t expire quickly
» they are easy to use in cooking
» they can help boost the diversity in your diet
» they can save you time in the kitchen

If you are interested in experimenting with canned foods, check out my previous post showcasing my top 10 faves x

THE FIRST TIME I MADE THIS RECIPE IT DIDN'T WORK!

Yep, that's right. The first time I made this Sweet Potato and Cinnamon Loaf it didn't work. I didn't plan to make it so I didn't have all the right ingredients and thought what the heck, I'll give it a go.

I didn't have an egg, so I just used a plant replacement.
I didn't have self-raising flour, so I used plain flour and some baking powder.
I didn't have pecans, so I used cashews.
I didn't have brown sugar, so I used raw sugar.

When I took it out of the oven it looked nice on top but the inside wasn't the nice loafy texture you see in this photo.

Now at this point, I could have sworn off ever making this recipe again. But I didn't. I bought the right ingredients and I tried again.

And you know what? It turned out AMAZING! I absolutely love it and I will definitely be making it again.

That's why I encourage my clients (and myself) to aim for progress, not perfection. Because it's ok for things to not work out the first time and if you give up then, you'll never have the chance to see what you could achieve.

Share this post with the if you agree 💜

P.S this recipe was created by and can be found . I highly recommend you check it out!!

YOUR BODY CAN'T TELL THE TIME!

Have you ever heard someone say something like "I can't eat dinner past X time" or "I can't eat breakfast before X time"?

This is what we call a food rule. This one, like many others, is based on a 'one size fit's all approach' which simply does not work.

Everyone is unique and everyone has ways of going about their lives which has an impact on the times they are hungry or the times that they are able to eat.

There is no magic universal time that everyone should or should not eat. In fact, I would argue it's more important to be in tune with your internal hunger cues rather than worry about what time the clock shows.

Lastly, remember that your body and its digestion system cannot tell the time! It will digest food exactly the same way no matter the time you eat it.

It is important to note that some people have certain medical reasons or specific performance goals and this means that the time they eat is a little more important.

MY NOT SO PICTURE-PERFECT BAKED OATS ...

This is a photo of the baked oats that I made in a reel last week. Take a look at the bowl, can you see that the oats spilt over the side?

It's not picture-perfect. But that's ok because I don't think it has to be.

I definitely could have re-made this and posted about it when the oats hadn't spilt over the side and when it would have been closer to 'perfect' than it is now.

But I decided not to, I posted it in all of its realness with the oats spilling over the side because it tasted great and I wanted to share it with you.

This photo is authentic and I bet it's relatable.

The majority of people's everyday food doesn't look picture-perfect when they eat it. And neither does mine.

The majority of people have at least a few dishes they haven't made perfectly. I certainly have more than a few.

So here's to my not so picture-perfect dishes, and to yours. May you enjoy them and may they nourish your bodies no matter what they look like on the plate.

AS PROMISED! ALL THE DETAILS ABOUT THIS CHOCOLATE SLICE …

I love Weet-Bix. I’ve eaten this since I was a kid and love using them as a base for tasty snacks. So when I saw this recipe from I knew I had to make it!

Funnily enough, I often get asked is it ok to have cereal for breakfast? My answer is yes! Something like Weet-Bix is a great option!

Not only are Weet-Bix really affordable, they keep well in the pantry so I don’t have to worry about them expiring before I use them all. They are super versatile and I love that they are made from whole grains (hello fibre!!) with a good source of some key vitamins and minerals!

And I’m pretty stoked there’s a gluten free version so I can make tasty snacks for all my gluten free friends and fam 🥰

Give this post a like if you love a good Weet-Bix in the morning … or in a chocolate slice?
