Kicking off the education year with an energetic start with Bairnsdale Regional Health Service!
On 25 February 2026, the RG1 monthly education calendar was officially launched with a session led by local rural generalist and APLS educator Dr Dave McConville.
Topic: Analgesia, pain, and procedural sedation in the emergency setting
The cohort of 10 rural generalist interns and Monash students (3B, 4C, 5D on placement at Bairnsdale) joined an interactive, hands-on emergency care session—especially focused on paediatric presentations.
Learners loved it: “High yield,” “Practical,” and “Engaging!”
Huge thanks to Dr McConville for an inspiring session, and to everyone who joined in.
Next up in March: the very popular 3 hour Ultrasound Practical, led by BRHS ED SMOs and Cardiac Sonographers.

Introducing our next group of Rural Generalist Interns!!

The Victorian Rural Generalist Program, Gippsland Region and Bairnsdale Regional Health Service this week welcomed the new cohort of 10 interns. Drawing from the excellent training of Monash University, Flinders University and University of Queensland the junior doctors are keen to commence their medical careers and join the fast growing network of Rural Generalist trainees and General Practitioner registrars in the East Gippsland region.

It was wonderful to see them join Craig (VRGP Loddon Mallee Regional Coordinator), Dr Kate (ERH Co-Director of Clinical Training), and Jane (ERH Medical Education Officer). We’re thrilled for the learning, growth, and impact ahead in your RG Internship journey.

VRGP had a really busy 2025, but we are ready for an awesome 2026!! One of the best things about January is meeting our Rural Generalist Interns.

Welcome to the 2026 VRGP Hume Region – Murray to the Mountains Intern Cohort!

We’re delighted to welcome 15 Rural Generalist Interns commencing orientation across Albury Wodonga Health (AWH) and Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW). This strong rural cohort will undertake core hospital rotations—Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery and Orthopaedics—alongside extended community GP placements across Mt Beauty, Benalla, Mansfield, Yarrawonga, Cobram and Kyabram throughout the year.

With 80% trained at Rural Clinical Schools, 40% from local programs at the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales, and five interns who grew up in the region, we’re proud to support their first year of postgraduate training.
