Many of you are having school meetings between now and the end of the year
A few tips that might help you make it through the meetings:
🌼 Get the meeting minutes - schools are REQUIRED to keep meeting minutes as proof of consultation. Take your own notes as well. At the beginning of the meeting, if the information isn't offered about who is taking minutes - ask. If they say no one is, request that someone do so.
🌼 Ask questions - if they say something that doesn't seem right or doesn't make sense, ask! "Help me understand..." or "I'd like to clarify that you're explicitly stating..." This also helps in meeting minutes if you raise questions about what they said and how it is captured.
🌼 Ideally, meetings will end with actionable items. If you haven't heard back in the school within 2 weeks, check in on the progress (and ensure they've sent you a copy of the meeting minutes).
🌼 Whenever possible DO NOT ATTEND ON YOUR OWN!!! School meetings are often 3-4+ staff and you. They are all on the same page, and will use school lingo. And you're there on your own, trying to keep up. If you don't have NDIS providers who can attend, get someone to come with you to be a note taker for the meeting. I attend meetings from Cairns to Melbourne with parents on a regular basis - don't hesitate to reach out if you need someone in your corner!!!
🌼 If you feel like you're spinning your wheels in the mud and not making any progress with supports; or like your child's needs exceed the capacity of the school, request that they put in a request for Regional support. If they're in a state school in QLD it's called a single line referral or a student support request. BCE has their own wording for it, but it's the same idea. And, independent schools often buy in to a "Student Resource Scheme" where they can access allied health providers - ask if they are a part of it and if they can get someone in. (If you're outside Queensland, same process, different name. If you ask them if there are Regional supports available that they, as a school, can consult with for additional support, they'll know what you're talking about).
