This Domestic Violence Remembrance Day on 1 May 2024, come together with our partners at Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre and communities across Victoria to light a candle and honour the memory of those lost as a result of domestic or family violence. Domestic and family violence affects people from all walks of life and includes many forms of abuse and violence that are not always physical. The Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil is a call to action to speak up, lift the veil of silence that surrounds domestic and family violence, and reach out for support if experiencing, and/or perpetrating violence. Show your support by attending the vigil in person, hosting a local event, lighting up your building in purple, sharing on socials or dedicating a virtual candle.

Today, on Trans Day of Visibility, we celebrate the resilience, strength, and beauty of our transgender community. Your existence is a testament to courage and authenticity.

Visibility isn't easy in a cruel world. Everyone should have the freedom to feel safe to be visible. We stand in solidarity with those who may be facing discrimination, prejudice, or danger simply for being their true selves. Your journey is valid, and your safety is paramount, and for those we lost along the way, we won't forget you and will continue to fight in your honor.

Visibility should be a choice, not an expectation. Whether you're out and proud or navigating your identity privately, your worth and dignity remain unchanged.

As an org that prides itself on our social justice framework, we promise to continue standing in solidarity and fighting for a safer world for trans and gender-diverse people here and everywhere. Together, we can strive for a world where visibility is celebrated, and everyone can live authentically. 🌟

Our Director of Stepfamilies Australia, Phoebe Wallish, said people with blended families were often trying to support two households, so the impact of inflation was doubled.

"Child support is an archaic system really. It hasn't kept up to date with the cost of living at all," she said.

Wallish said parents receiving child support also struggled when payments were irregular and adjusting the way child support was calculated wouldn't help unless there was also an audit of non-compliance.

"Overhauling it in terms of having really clear guidelines around what the child support looks like is important because there's conflict around it."

Australia's child support system is outdated and not keeping pace with inflation, according to critics, who say it disproportionately disadvantages women.
