Often when I talk to junior athletes and their parents, the first thing they want to jump to is 'what magic strategy can we use to get that 1%' or they've been told by a coach or teammate that 'X' supplement is going to get you 'Y' result... and that's great, but for most of these athletes, they're not meeting their nutrient or energy needs in the first place. 🥗❌
For junior athletes, the focus should always be health first. This includes eating a wide variety of wholegrains, fruits, veggies, lean proteins and dairy to ensure we are meeting our basest nutrient requirements. This also includes plenty of plain water. Only THEN do we start to look at the finer details of sports performance (pre- and post-workout fuelling, finer hydration strategies, recover etc.). 🍏🥕💧
