I come from a professional background. I’ve spent numerous hours of my working life under fake fluorescent lights, on grey carpeted floors, within white painted walls whilst being surrounded by concrete, asphalt, traffic and industrial noise.
I once got in an argument with the head of HR because, while there was a perfectly good office space with windows allowing natural light, myself and 7 others (some of which were management) were subject to work inside a tiny octagon prison located in a windowless warehouse. Not only was I not allowed to change offices, but the question had never been raised and HR thought it was odd that I was even asking.
What is wrong with this?
To fully understand we can look back as far as the first living cell LUCA. LUCA was the first single cell organism that, like humans, reacted to its environment. Life has adapted and evolved a great extent since LUCA. Humans are now the most intelligent and self aware form of life on this planet to date. Hooray for humans! However, this ongoing evolution has mostly taken place amongst nature. We are physiologically and biologically built to survive and thrive within the natural world. So it comes as no surprise that we feel happier and more relaxed when we go camping, away from the hustle and bustle of cities and urban life.
Due to the demands of modern life most of us can agree that there is now a rather significant separation from nature. After all, a lot has changed since our hunting and gathering days in the savannah’s and grasslands of East Africa… except us. Our nervous system still reacts the same way to a hungry lion as it does to peak hour traffic or the printer failing… again...
