Picky Eaters and What to Do

Just keep trying at the initial phases when you give your child new food. Try to serve in different ways, or different cooking methods at least ten times and you would be surprised that your child might like it eventually. Picky eating behaviours often go away by the age of 5, however, optimising nutrition from birth is crucial for healthy growth and development.

How well do you understand your baby?

“Babies’ early experiences and relationships stimulate their brains, shaping the way they see and respond to the world. As your baby’s awareness of the world grows through these experiences, your baby develops and learns, and you’ll see many changes in behaviour.
Your baby soon learns to tell you apart from everybody else. Your baby’s relationship with you and other primary carers is the main way your baby learns about the world and how to respond to it. And your baby will learn a lot about how to behave by watching you.”

Understanding your baby’s cues through their body language helps to build your relationship with them which is vital for their development.

You will pick up signs that your baby is hungry, tired, wants to play or needs a break when you spend time with them. As you spend more time with them, you will be able to pick up their cues as they also pick up your individual cues to communicate each others’ needs and feelings.

However, each baby will develop their own mixed signals and communication style. It may seem unclear but by watching your baby, being present for them and trialing what your baby is telling you, you will soon become attuned with each other.

Give it time and you will learn to respond in the way that suits your baby.

Growth measurements in the first year and at regular intervals can reassure parents that their child is growing well. This is important for identifying problems and assessing the effectiveness of treatment and interventions. Underlying health and development issues could be due to altered growth. However, some factors affecting growth include:

“Genetics - short parents are more likely to have short children
Environment - the general health and age of the mother, number of pregnancies, food security, socio-economic status and substance use such as smoking affect birth weight and growth
Nutrition - breastfed infants have different growth patterns in the first year of life compared to non-breastfed babies.
Biological causes - children who are large for gestational age at birth (for example due to maternal diabetes or maternal obesity) have a higher risk of developing obesity and metabolic syndrome later in life.
Health and wellbeing - frequent infections, developmental delays, feeding difficulties, long term medications and medical conditions such as kidney or heart disease can all affect infant and young children's growth.”
Progression for babies’ health should be discussed with the family and referral for further assessment should be made if appropriate.

Hello mamas đŸ‘‹đŸ» how are you coping with your new-born? Whilst you take care of your baby, please remember to practice self-care as well ❀

Infancy is a period when the baby grows very fast, how exciting yet challenging! In the first year, babies learn and master new skills such as taking the first step, smiling and waving “bye bye”.

Babies slowly learn to explore, reach out, and grow with the environment around them.

Be patient with every baby’s developmental milestones and develop the bonds of love and trust by being present for them.

As infancy is a critical period of life, setting the foundation will guide babies’ holistic development in the long term.

Enjoy the memorable time spent together, Mamas and Papas đŸ„°

When do you use formula feeding?
Why do you choose formula feeding?
Is formula feeding the same as breastfeeding?
Nutritionally, formula feed is a good alternative to breast milk - some brands may contain vitamins and nutrients that are supplemented even in breastfed babies. Even though breastfeeding is the ideal food for babies, sometimes this may be too much to handle. Compare the benefits and limitations of formula feed vs breastfeeding and decide which is the best for you, your baby and your family.
Always feel free to speak to your doctor or lactation consultant as these healthcare professionals can provide the information on your options to help you make the best decision.

Breastfeeding has many benefits for the newborn and mums. Ideally, breast milk is the best food for a baby’s digestive system. It contains antibodies that protects babies from infections, and breastfed babies are less likely to develop health problems or become overweight.
Breastfeeding can be great for moms as it may protect from breast and ovarian cancer, and helps to burn off extra weight gained during pregnancy.
The skin-to-skin contact during breastfeeding enhances the emotional connection between moms and bubs, strengthening the bond and support.

Now, since breastfeeding proves to be very beneficial, why doesn't every mother choose to breastfeed?
Breastfeeding requires a huge commitment from mums. It takes up a lot of time and energy which can be draining to a mother’s overall health and other commitments. Family support would ease the breastfeeding journey to ensure babies are nutritionally complete.
Some moms may have trouble with breastfeeding but a lactation consultant usually can help them to overcome this.

Choose what’s right for you, and enjoy your breastfeeding journey!

Breastfeeding has a myriad of benefits for both the infant and mother.

“In Australia, it is recommended that infants be exclusively breastfed until around 6 months of age when solid foods are introduced. It is further recommended that breastfeeding be continued until 12 months of age and beyond, for as long as the mother and child desire.”

Support and encouragement from healthcare professionals, family and community groups can help mothers with their breastfeeding journey.

Haven’t emphasized enough about the benefits of breastfeeding! đŸ€±Other than protection against infections, diseases and other health issues, it also creates a bonding experience between mother and child. Affectionate bonding builds a sense of trust and support which helps the brain produce and use oxytocin, resulting in a child to feel more positive emotions.

Remember to seek the right support to guide your breastfeeding journey đŸ„°

The composition of breastmilk contains many factors that contribute to the development of a child’s immune system and a healthy gut microbiome. Its’ composition varies between feeds and mothers over the course of lactation.
“The first fluid made by breastfeeding mothers is called colostrum. It is made in small amounts and is a rich source of immune protective factors (eg secretory IgA, lactoferrin, white blood cells) and developmental factors (eg epidermal growth factor). Around day 3 after birth, a mother’s breast milk ‘comes in’ and this represents a period of increased milk production to support the needs of the rapidly growing baby.”
The main source of carbohydrates comes from lactose.
Casein, α-lactalbumin, lactoferrin, secretory immunoglobulin IgA, lysozyme and serum albumin are the most abundant proteins.
Fat in breast milk is highly variable dependent on the maternal diet.
