The 13th-19th June is Infant Mental Health Awareness Week.

This week is dedicated to encouraging in inclusion of babies in mental health policies, strategies and services, and recognising that there is often a "baby blindspot" when it comes to infants mental health.

The theme for 2022 is 'Understanding Early Trauma' and aims to highlight the ways in which experiencing trauma in our youngest years, such as witnessing domestic abuse, can have a significant impact on brain development.

For more information you can visit the Australian Association for Infant Mental Health at www.aaimh.org.au

People with schizophrenia are among the most highly stigmatised and socially marginalised people in our community.

The aim of Schizophrenia Awareness Week is to reduce stigma towards people affected by schizophrenia, encourage inclusive behaviour, disprove myths about schizophrenia, and encourage people to seek help if they or their carers are affected by schizophrenia.

Identifying your values | An exercise

1. Take a moment to make a list of your values with the following headings:
- Very important to me
- Quite important to me
- Not important to me
2. Make sure your “very important” values consist of 10 values.
3. Now rate them from 1: top priority to 10: lowest priority.
You can further this exercise by choosing your top 3 values and breaking them down into what these values actually mean to you, goals to set towards these values, and feelings and emotions these values invoke.

We hope this exercise will help you in determining what you value most moving forward this year.

The Importance of Values |

Values are basic and fundamental beliefs that guide or motivate attitudes or actions. They help us to determine what is important to us. Values describe the personal qualities we choose to embody to guide our actions; the sort of person we want to be; the manner in which we treat ourselves and others, and our interaction with the world around us.

Vison Boards |

Vision boards are a wonderful tool to provide mental clarity and imagine a positive future for ourselves, increasing happy emotions and optimism.

Some tips on creating a vision board this new year:

- Consider your values. Values are a way of helping you to recognize what is important to you, and therefore helping you to prioritize where your attention and your energy goes.
- Set priorities. What do you feel like you can realistically accomplish over the next year? Visualise your priorities by placing them front and center of your vision board.
- Update as you go. Your goals, dreams, and priorities may change as the year progresses. Keep this in mind and don't feel tied to what you you thought you may have wanted when the year began.
- Place it somewhere you'll see it. Ideally you'll want to look at your vision board every day. Try an avoid online galleries and stick to an old fashioned piece of paper or poster.

Vision |

As humans, we have a need for a degree of control, to feel like we're having efficacy in moving our life in the direction that we want to.

According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, all humans have a desire for stimulation and achievement. He uses the phrase ‘self-actualize’, meaning to feel happy, to feel pleasure, to feel satisfied with life.

Creating a vision can assist with understanding where to put your attention and energy, create hope for the future, stimulate motivation and may even reduce overwhelm.

Empathy |

A fundamental aspect of connecting with those around us is our ability to display empathy. To be empathic is the ability to recognise, understand and share the feelings of another person. In order to recognise and understand someone else's emotions we need to try and connect with that emotion in ourselves and listen to understand, rather than listen to respond.

Do you have any morning rituals from lockdown that you have been able to keep since entering back into the “real world”? While the inevitable morning rush of commutes, traffic and school drop offs have returned for most of us, it can be beneficial to try and maintain some of these practices, even if they may need to be slightly altered to fit into a busy lifestyle.

Some tips from Sana to maintain your morning routine:

- Wake up earlier. While it’s tempting to hit snooze on the alarm, it may help to utilize the early hours to fit your morning practice into a busy day.

- Don’t check your phone first thing in the morning. It’s easy to get caught up in emails and social media as soon as you wake, avoid the temptation by leaving your phone alone.

- Have some flexibility with your timeline. Are there any aspects of your morning routine that you can incorporate into your drive to work, or later in the day? Maybe you put your coffee into a takeaway mug and play a podcast on your commute. Find a way to include this self-care into your daily activities.

- Preparation is key. Organise as much as you can the night before to maximise your time in the morning. If you can, pack lunches, lay out outfits, and do anything you can to allow for a less stressful morning. This will give you more time to think about your mindset and set intentions for that day.
