There were lots of smiles 😁 and laughs today at the 'Secret Girls Business' workshop on the Sunshine Coast! It is actually possible to talk about puberty AND have a good time... who would have thought 😉

We had a great chat about all of the changes that are about to occur (or are occurring) for these girls. They learnt all about body changes, emotional changes, their feelings around all this and PERIODS... yes, they learnt about this. As always, this was a point of the workshop when everyone was so engaged. Most girls DEFINITELY want to know more... even if it doesn't seem like it!

Will you join us over the next two weekends for this amazing workshop? This is an opportunity to learn ALL about her development is a safe, friendly and supportive space ❤️ The Sunshine Coast workshop will run on Sunday 17th August (9am - 11:30am) at Kawana Island Meeting Place and in Brisbane on Sunday 24th August (9am - 11:30am) at Grange Community Hall, Newmarket. This is the LAST time the 'Secret Girls Business' Workshop is on offer this year!

The 'Tween Talk: Secret Girls' Business' Workshop is for girls aged 9-12 years and covers all the information your daughter needs to know about the changes ahead! We will focus on understanding the changes that occur, both physical and emotional, we will identify any worries your daughter might have about her development, plus so much more! There is also an Anonymous Question Box where the girl's have the opportunity to ask any questions about this stage of life... and will have them answered during the workshop (This box is a HUGE hit with the girls)!

Yesterday was the first session of our Term 3 progam ❤️ We had such a great start and the girls thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each other and making new connections.

We have such a BIG six weeks ahead, full of learning and fun. Cant wait to get back there next week!

What a beautiful group we had today! It was very evident that these girls took some great lessons away this morning 💡

Sadly (as pointed out by one of the participants today) these girls have been exposed to SO many unhealthy friendship behaviours 💔 We also talked about some of the unhealthy friendship behaviours they have done to others. Everyone admitted that they too have treated their friends in a way that probably didn't feel good. There is some light though... as we discussed today, figuring out how to be a good friend is a learning experience. Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we don't! Unfortunately sometimes we need to have these negative experiences to help us learn and grow.

We had a great afternoon learning how to deal with friendship challenges in a positive and constructive way ❤️ As with all the groups that attend the friendship workshops, these girls spoke of so many ups and downs that they experience in their friendships.

This group of girls today were wonderful! No doubt they learnt some brand new skills. Now it’s just a case of applying them to real life!

Looking forward to finishing up the friendship workshops tomorrow on the Sunny Coast!

Shhhh 🤫... during the next workshop we'll be covering 'Secret Girls Business!' This workshop focuses on EVERYTHING your Tween needs to know about the tween to teen years.

Whether you know it or not, your Tween has plenty of questions about the changes that are about to occur between the tween to teen years. This light-hearted and friendly workshop has been developed to set the record straight and squash anxiety around the unknown.

The workshop setting is also a great way for girls to learn that almost EVERY girl is feeling exactly as they are... nervous, embarrassed and overwhelmed about all the changes that are about to occur. They most certainly are not alone in their thoughts and emotions 🫶 All discussions in this workshop are not only light-hearted but age-appropriate, and dare it be said, even fun?!

Today kicked off the double weekend of friendship workshops! This is always such a valuable topic for our girls ❤️

As you are all aware, Tween friendships can really be hard. We learnt so many skills today to help them navigate the ups and downs. One thing we did also learn, is sometimes despite our best efforts of trying to manage our friendships in a positive and productive way, it doesn't always work. We can't control people's behaviour or reactions and we need to learn that sometimes we need to rethink some of our friendships. All our girls deserve to have positive and supportive friends around them!

Hi WONDERFUL parents 🫶 I'm Jess! I probably could have used a 'work' photo to introduce myself but I thought why not share a photo in my natural habitat 🏖 I usually do these 'introduction posts' about once a year! After all, it's nice to know who you're sending your daughter to when she participates in a workshop. It's also reassuring to know that the workshops are being put together by someone with lots of knowledge on the subject and a wealth of experience in working with young people.

For those that don't know, I'm a Registered Psychologist. I've been fully registered since 2008, but before that I worked in the Community Sector. I worked with a number of youth and family organisations with the aim to better the lives of young people and their families. It was in one of these roles that I had the opportunity to co-facilitate my first program with a group of Year 8 girls. I absolutely LOVED it! Working in a group setting really spoke to me and I had the opportunity to do this multiple times during my time at these organisations.

After I finished studying and was fully registered, I spent several years working in private practice. While I love working one on one with people (and I still do this now), I missed the group environment so much. Plus, I was seeing so many entrenched issues that I wanted to do something to be preventative. Why not educate children early, with skills and information to maybe avoid issues becoming so entrenched later in life?! Also, pre-adolescence is such a significant time of growth and change. I was positive that every pre-teen could benefit from resources and guidance to navigate such a tricky time.

The desire to educate, inspire and empower young girls was too great not to explore it. I took a leap of faith and that's when Head Start Psychology was born! I ran my first ever program (developed by me also) in a small school on the Sunshine Coast in 2014. The business has grown and evolved from there to where it is today ❤️

Besides running a business and spending time with your daughter, I'm also a wife and Mum of two kids (aged 9 and 7) and a dog Mum to a giant dog named Storm 🐾 When I'm not working on the weekends, I'm just like all of you, super busy running around to kids sport and activities. When I'm not doing that, you'll mostly find me at the beach (my happy place), on the water, walking my dog or pottering around at home with my family.

You have all been such a supportive community and I appreciate you sending your daughter along to the workshops. I also can not thank you enough for spreading the word about what I do. To the parents and families that have attended workshop, after workshop, thank you so much for your support and I'm thrilled that your daughter enjoys them so much that she wants to come back again and again. If I am yet to meet your daughter, hopefully I"ll meet her soon 💜

📣 FRIENDSHIP SKILLS WORKSHOP 📣 Term 3 starts tomorrow and as we enter Semester 2, it's usually the time of year that we really see those friendship problems start to emerge. Now is a great time of year to upskill when it comes to managing friendships!

The North Lakes workshop is taking place next SUNDAY! There is still a handful of spots left. Registration will close THIS FRIDAY at 12pm.

There are spots available to the Brisbane Friendship workshop and a handful left to the Sunshine Coast workshop, both set to take place in two weeks (Registration will close 24 hours before the workshop date, unless sold out beforehand)!

We will cover everything your Tween needs to know about pre-teen friendships including:

🌸 What healthy friendships feel and look like
🌸 Problems that pop up in friendship groups
🌸 How to handle friendship DRAMA
🌸 Identify what qualities are important in a friend AND important to YOUR daughter
🌸 How she can be a great friend to others

If you want your daughter's friendship skills to GROW 🌿, then this is a fantastic workshop to build on the skills that she has developed so far, and extend them further.

ONLY 3 SPOTS LEFT to the Term 3 Program! We kick off in just over 3 weeks, but Registration closes in 10 days. If you live on the Sunshine Coast and you feel like your daughter could get a little support with her emotions then this one is for you 🫵

This program is unlike anything else Head Start offers ✨ Spread over six weeks, we delve deep into managing emotions and learn multiple tools and strategies along the way. The session numbers are limited to eight girls, it's the only small group program on offer. One of the best parts about this weekly program is the relationships that are formed 💞 We all just really get to know each other over that time and honestly it's so nice. Each week the girls rush in eagerly awaiting the session to start and they find it so hard to say goodbye when our 6 weeks is up. Below are just a few photos from last year's Term 3 Program 🤩

Over six weeks we will focus on:
👉 Learning about and understanding our emotions and the importance of expressing them
👉 Learning about our AMAZING brain 🧠 and why we have BIG feelings sometimes
👉 Understanding why meltdowns happen 🌋 and strategies to help catch it before it happens
👉 Learning multiple calming strategies to help when the BIG emotions are building (but also if the meltdown has happened) 🧘‍♀️
👉 Improve your daughter's ability to manage emotional situations both big and small

This program is covered through Medicare, so if you have the correct documentation in place from your GP (Mental Health Care Plan) you'll only have a small out of pocket expense. This program is also covered through NDIS.

Today's workshop on the Sunshine Coast 🏖 was the last of the Problem Solving workshops these holidays. The girls were very open and shared all of the situations that make them feel BIG emotions 🌋... friendship troubles, school stress, teacher issues, sibling drama, nagging parents (yes, we made the list), just to name a few. Today they were taught how to stop, pause and respond to the situations (by using their AMAZING brains 🧠) rather than being so reactive with so much emotion!

Like all new skills, the ones we learnt during our Problem Solving workshops will take time and practice to perfect. Wishing all the girls that attended the Problem Solving Workshops this week all the best implementing their NEW skills 💜

It was a good day to be inside 🥶💨 We certainly weren't affected by the cold
temperatures and wind. Not only were we warm, but we learnt some great skills around how to handle situations calmly and with a little less emotion 🙌

These girls really bonded today. It was so lovely to see so many new friendships form over the morning. There was also lots of wisdom shared by all the girls. It's always wonderful to watch them share and learn from one another.

There's one more 'Problem Solving without the DRAMA!' workshop tomorrow on the Sunshine Coast and then next week is all about self-confidence, self-worth and self-love with our 'Beauty - The Real Picture' Workshop 💜
