It’s been quiet over here and I’ve been wanting to share with you the reasons why. I’ve been a bit busy!! Reflecting on a huge year for me both personally and in work.

💃🏼In Feb I took over as manager at the starting off with a bang at the annual conference held in Brisbane. It’s been a juggle doing the role in 2-3 days a week and I’ve worked some long days to get it done but have loved the role, the team that I’ve got and the goals we are working towards for naturopaths in this setting.

💒✈️Personally around this time I got to go to Sydney & Melbourne for 2 of my friends hens days, and two weddings which is always an honour to celebrate so much love.

👩‍⚕️In my clinic I conducted 400 consultations and helped so many with their health. I have been lucky enough to practice my profession with doctors and have their support & understanding for it. I supervised 3 naturopathic students doing their masters and 1 medical student of gastroenterology. I spoke at an event all thing microbiome for

🤓I did 5 courses run by (her cracking case series and nutritional prescribers program) & s (advanced fertility, pregnancy, post PARTUM and paediatric care) and 6 master classes in naturopathic dog care (all to spoil my golden boy sunny).

🏡🎸🇬🇷🍕💍🐴🥳Personally my partner and I bought a house in the postcode we’ve grown to call home over the last 5 years, and moved houses into it. I went to blues fest for the first time! I travelled through Europe ticking off some travel destination goals including Greece, Paris and Rome and celebrated my best friend’s wedding in Italy. I took up horse riding lessons. And I turned 30 surrounded by my dearest beautiful friends.

It’s been a busy year but an epic one and I can’t wait for what the new year will bring. I’ve gained so much experience as a naturopath 4 years in to my career both from my clinical experience, life experience and all the further education I’ve been cramming in where I can. I plan to bring you all lots more content here next year, expand my business and treat lots more of you to achieve your best health yet!

Over the past year I’ve observed many peoples relationship with their diet alongside their food perceptions, choices and behaviours.

What I noticed to be the most striking was that so many people aren’t eating enough. They aren’t eating their macronutrients in balance and they are confused about what healthy eating even is.

Most of us assume we over eat. And in some cases we do. This generally stems from excess carb intake which converts to sugar in the body and then fat. This is a big driver of our overweight and unwell society.

But what I noticed was that most people under eat in regard to their BASAL METABOLIC RATE. This is the amount of Kjs/ calories needed to keep your body alive if you didn’t get out of bed. So therefore this phenomenon = slower METABOLISM because your body thinks it needs to conserve. So that FAT isn’t going anywhere as it takes a lot of energy to burn and the body currently thinks it’s running on empty. What does tend to go is your MUSCLE MASS as this is easier to convert to fuel and happens especially when dietary restrictions are also low in carbs.

Anyone here relating to the “diet but not loosing weight” paradigm!?

Under eating doesn’t just apply to the basal metabolic rate. And this can apply to those who over eat carbs too. I am seeing lots of dietary deficiencies in PROTEIN, CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM & POTASSIUM. Protein is the main source for many of our micro minerals such as iron and zinc and you guessed it - it makes up our muscle mass. So you can see how under eating can lead to DISHARMONY IN THE BODY.

A classic example of this disharmony is those with a dietary CALCIUM deficiency. You won’t be able to loose weight, you’ll have a leaky gut and your bones will be slowly chipping away! If you’ve cut dairy have you considered calcium replacements??

It sounds confusing but it’s really just about balance, adequacy and enjoyment. And that’s what I’m here for.

If diet was emphasised more the beneficial changes you would see in health care and disease management would be profound!

Bringing it back to basics!

What are you eating?

Are you getting your 5 veg and 2 fruits a day?

Diet therapy is a major part of my practice as a naturopath as food is the fuel for health. I offer diet tips and education to my clients to maximise their eating habits and health goals. If you’ve heard of anti candida diet, low histamine diet, vegetarian diet, Mediterranean diet, 5:2 diet and so on things can become overwhelming. Take the pressure off and get an expert opinion to tailor a diet to you.

Top tips for a strong start:

-lean red meat 2-3 times a week
-Don’t skip breakfast
-Eat regular meals
-Get in 5 vegetables daily (colourful)
-2 fruits a day
-2 litres of water

For more advice book in with me for a diet session.

Fibre is important for a healthy microbiome. Considered a prebiotic, it feeds the probiotic bacteria in our intestines which enables a healthy gut bug balance. Low intake can starve this good bacteria allowing commensal microbes such as candida to thrive!

When candida is overgrown, it can produce toxins that can lead to an increased need to support our detoxification channels. Fibre is one of the best tools that can be used to support detoxification processes and regulate bowel motions.

Top sources that will help with candida
-Inulin
-Partially hydrolysed guar gum
-Ground flaxseeds
-Oats
-Chia seeds
-Broccoli
-Lentils

It’s always good to note that seeing a naturopath to assess your gut health is important as in certain conditions/ dysbiotic states certain fibres can make symptoms worse in the short term.

We made it to Friday 🎉
Always a great day to reflect on the week and set some good intentions.

Something that is a great exercise for mental health is to think of 3 thinks you are grateful for. You can do this during breath work or after. Look into the environment you’re in and what is it that you’re thankful to see, feel and have.

This helps to stimulate GABA & serotonin your calming and happy neurotransmitters.

Probiotics assist in improving the microbiome in both the gut and the va**na. The va**na microbiomes dominant bacteria should be lactobacilli which creates an acidic environment, reducing the risk of infections.

Lactobacillus species are your go to for thrush, being commonly low when there is an overgrowth of candida.

It is important however to ensure you are using the right strain for the right condition and location of treatment. Talking to a naturopath can help create an individualised and effective approach!

Symptoms of thrush;
-white discharge that looks like cottage cheese
-va**na discomfort (itching/ burning)
-redness or swelling of the v***a/ va**na
-stinging pain when urinating/ during s*x

“If your gut isn’t happy then get ready to experiences other issues”

Common conditions that are related to gut health;

The digestive systems is what enables us to survive as this system is what takes the food we eat and turns it in to fuel.

What kind of fuel are you making? Are you constantly putting in e10 or have you been treating your beak to some of the premium 95??

Diet is the first step. Then good health will come.

I work a lot with diet and can use basic bloods or a program called food works to analyse your diet to see if your gut is happy with what’s coming in.
