Josie Smith
Josie Smith is a Filipino-born visual artist and writer. She began her artistic practice in the Philippines, where she participated in group exhibitions. After relocating to Australia, she continued making art as a hobby, which later became an important part of her recovery following a traumatic event.

Her work was significantly shaped by the 2019–2020 Black Summer Bushfires, during which she lost her husband, John Smith, who died while attempting to save their bush property. Following this event, Josie focused on her art practice, studied psychology, and wrote her memoir.

Her work combines memoir and visual art and reflects experiences of loss, survival and connection. In addition to her creative practice, Josie supports youth mental health initiatives and donates 30% of her painting sales to The Local Gatho, a grassroots organisation supporting young people and addressing isolation in regional communities.

John Smith
John Smith was a sculptor whose work drew from natural materials and human forms. His sculptures were created on his bush property and reflect his engagement with landscape and place.

During the 2019–2020 Black Summer Bushfires, John lost his life while defending his property. His sculptures survived the fires and were later recovered from the site. These works are now displayed in John’s Corner, located in the garden of his wife, Josie Smith.

On the same property, John preserved a timber fence dating back over one hundred years by reinforcing its base with rocks to protect it from fire. The fence was originally constructed during the gold rush era by miners who were early settlers on the land and remains standing today.

John’s sculptural works and preserved structures form part of his artistic legacy.

Thought it was an ornament, turned out to be the real seal 🦭🎄

The holiday season can be full-on, and staying active can help release stress and support your mood.

Being active doesn’t have to look a certain way, small bits of movement all count.

Take a walk, check out what’s around you, and let yourself pause for a moment, seals optional. 💚

headspace Batemans Bay

headspace Batemans Bay is a federally funded initiative being implemented by Coordinare, South Eastern NSW Primary Healthcare Network, in partnership with headspace National. Relationships Australia Canberra & Region, a not-for-profit service provider, has been awarded the role of lead agency to oversee the headspace service in Batemans Bay from late 2020. Following the wake of the 2019/20 Summer bushfires that impacted the wider Eurobodalla and Shoalhaven regions, the Batemans Bay headspace service was fast tracked to commence providing early intervention mental health services to young people aged 12 to 25 living in the Eurobodalla and Shoalhaven regions.

Referral is easy – young people can refer themselves by calling us on 1800 718 383 between the hours of 10am to 2pm Monday-Friday. Counselling appointments are available for booking Monday to Friday. If you are a family member, friend, or service provider and want to support a young person to get in touch with us, you can call us, complete and fax through our community referral form found online on our website or have a young person attend their local GP clinic to for referral (MHTPs are not required to access our services).

Due to Covid-19 physical distancing measures, headspace Batemans Bay currently only offers online and phone counselling services. Please stay tuned to our online accounts for updates including community engagement initiatives and the development of our centre establishment.

The headspace website also offers a wide range of national online services. Here, you can access lots of great mental health resources including group chats, online communities, interactive resources and 1:1 direct support with professionals. Watch this video to learn more about this, or visit headspace.org.au to create your own private account.
