What is an alternating air mattress?
An alternating air mattress is made with cylindrical cells that gently inflate and deflate in a set pattern.
Why? To closely mimic spontaneous movement, so that people who can’t move for themselves (due to age, injury or other health condition) are not at risk of pressure injury.
What’s a pressure injury? A pressure injury happens when someone stays in the same position for too long. The constant pressure, along with possible friction or sliding, can slow or stop blood flow to the skin and underlying tissue. Without enough oxygen and nutrients, the skin begins to break down – leading to painful wounds.
A pressure mattress works by redistributing your body weight, reducing pressure on vulnerable areas like your heels, hips, and tailbone by alternating air flow to gently move pressure around the body, supporting healthy blood flow and keeping the skin protected.
