Such an Honour to be the recipient of National Aboriginal Credentialed Diabetes of the year, thanks to those who have guided, mentored and supported me over the last 13 years, this is possible because of you. Love doing what I do 🖤💛❤️.

👏ADEA is proud to announce the recipients of the 2024 CDE of the Year Awards, with Julie Kha honoured as the Jan Baldwin National CDE of the Year for her exceptional contributions to diabetes education at both state and national levels. Alongside this national recognition, outstanding CDEs from each state and territory were also celebrated. Additionally, three new CDE of the Year categories were introduced this year: Early Career, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and People’s Choice. These prestigious ADEA awards, made possible with financial support from Eli Lilly, were announced on 23 August at the Australasian Diabetes Congress. In the coming weeks, ADEA will feature profiles of each recipient, highlighting their unique contributions and stories. See the full list: https://ow.ly/MqQR50T4FfR

Have you had your kidneys checked?

It’s World Kidney Day!

Sadly, diabetes-related kidney disease is one of the most widespread and potentially most debilitating and costly diabetes complications. An estimated
330,000 Australians living with diabetes have chronic kidney disease.

Most diabetes-related kidney disease is preventable if detected early but currently hundreds of thousands of people are missing out on vital checks that would support early treatment when it is most effective.

That’s why we’ve been calling for a National Diabetes Kidney Disease Screening Program to raise awareness of the checks and make them more convenient. This would help Australians living with diabetes get the checks they need to prevent kidney failure.

An exciting step forward….

Research breakthrough!

A JDRF-funded, Australian world-first clinical trial has shown that a commonly prescribed rheumatoid arthritis drug can preserve the body’s own insulin production and suppress the progression of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in those newly diagnosed with the condition.

The trial findings demonstrated that administration of the drug baricitinib, a once-daily tablet over a 48-week period, preserved beta cell function, reduced blood glucose fluctuations, and reduced the need for insulin in those who had been diagnosed within the past 100 days.

This research, out of the St Vincent's Institute and led by Professors Thomas Kay and Helen Thomas, follows decades of work investigating what causes the immune system to attack beta cells in people with T1D. The trial was jointly funded by JDRF Australia, through our Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Research Network, and JDRF International.

This is an incredibly exciting step forward, showing promise for a new therapeutic option for supressing T1D progression.
