🦵➡️🌊 He’s the expert in knees… but this August, Dr. John Gallagher is swapping his scrubs for a swimsuit.

At the end of the month, our resident orthopaedic knee replacement surgeon is diving head-first into one of the most challenging open water swims in the world — the English Channel!

That’s 34km (or more depending on the currents) between Dover and Calais, just him, the sea, and a generous coating of goose fat.

John’s been putting in the hard yards — braving the Sydney Cold Water Swim Camp (night swims and 8 hours in icy Botany Bay 🥶), taking on wild surf at Currumbin, and clocking up ocean kilometres with friends, such as a 5km swim from Coolangatta to Tugun. We couldn’t be more inspired by his dedication!

Follow the journey via his wife (and clinic-co pilot) Susie’s Substack, where she’s documenting the behind-the-scenes action ➡️ https://ow.ly/Og7450WAtrh

Go John! We’re all cheering for you! 🏊‍♂️💥

We're pleased to announce that today we have confirmed a new two year in-principle funding agreement with Bupa.

The agreement will ensure that Bupa patients can continue to receive care and treatment at our hospitals across the country without any additional out of pocket charges.

This agreement will give certainty to our staff, doctors and Bupa customers.

We're looking forward to continuing our partnership with Bupa, working together to deliver outstanding patient care and collaborating on initiatives to support the long term sustainability of our sector.

Healthscope now has new agreements with four of Australia’s five major insurance groups – Bupa, Medibank, NIB, HCF. Our notice of contract termination with the Australian Health Service Alliance (AHSA) funds remains in place, effective from 4 March 2025.

Hot-dignity-dog it’s International Hot Dog Day 🌭

This winter has been one of the toughest for some of our Brissy Private team, so what better way to say thank you than with gourmet hot dogs & ice cream!

Here’s some trivia for you, the term ‘hot dog’ was derived in the 19th century, when German immigrants brought to New York America’s first hot dogs, originally referred to as a dachshund sausage — for their long shape that resembled the beloved dachshund pups. Around 1870, Charles Feltman, a German immigrant, began to sell hot dogs out of a stand on Coney Island. He sold over 3,600 frankfurters in a bun that year alone.

Thank you to all of our Brisbane Private team - we appreciate you!

Today marks the start of Men's Health Week!
With the aim to break down health barriers and create healthier environments by increasing awareness of male health issues, Men's Health Week is an opportunity to talk about and educate each other on the 'health gap' faced by the Australian male population.
We want to encourage all of our men in the Brisbane Private community to seek out detection and treatment of health issues, no matter how unimportant it may seem.
There is nothing more important than your health.

Good health is vital for a happy and full life. Knowing more about how your body works and the conditions that can affect you are the first steps to leading a healthier life.

25/05/2022

Every year on the 26th of May, National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’. It is estimated that as many as one in three Indigenous children were taken from their families between 1910 and the 1970s; losing their connections to family, identity, land, language and culture.
The first National Sorry Day was held on 26th May 1998, in the wake of the 'Bringing Them Home' report that was tabled in Parliament in 1997. The Bringing Them Home report is a result of a Government Inquiry into the past policies which caused children to be removed from their families and communities in the 20th century.
Today, National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the strength of The Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation. While today carries great significance for the Stolen Generations and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, it is a day for all Australians from around the country to come together in commemoration of strength, unity and healing.

Brisbane Private Rehabilitation Nurse Unit Manager, Andrew Abadiano cannot imagine life without being on a Rehab ward
“I started my nursing career on a Rehab ward in New Zealand, I was there for 8 years and loved it. When I moved to Australia 4 years ago, I knew I wanted to continue with this work, it is just so rewarding.

“Witnessing the progression of the patient from being acute, through to seeing them walk out of the hospital is amazing. When you know you played a small part of someone’s big achievement, words cannot describe the feeling.

"I have been with the Brisbane Private Hospital team for 4 years now, and it is truly an incredible place. The team are so supportive of myself and each other, they always help new team members and go out of their way to make each other feel safe and welcomed. The VMOs are fantastic, always approachable and go above and beyond for their patients. Many friendships have been formed, memories made and experiences had on this ward”.

"Every day I am reminded how lucky I am to have such a rewarding career with amazing opportunities, living in one of the most beautiful countries in the world."
