Psychological stress and emotional dysregulation are strongly correlated with bruxism, positioning it as a somatic stress response.
Studies have shown that bruxism is often linked to anxiety, chronic stress, emotional suppression, and heightened sympathetic nervous system activity (Dimitrou & Chatzigianni, 2019; Lobbezoo et al., 2013).
For many individuals, these stressors may not be consciously recognized, yet the body exhibits clear signs of tension. This pattern is consistent with the theory of mind-body interconnection, wherein unprocessed emotional stress is expressed physiologically (American Psychological Association, 2017; van der Kolk, 2015).
