Heart Foundation Walking groups walk in far and wide locations around this country, and this week for we would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the First Nations peoples who have walked these lands for thousands of years before us. ❤️

gives us an opportunity to learn more about First Nations cultures and histories, and a great place to start is learning the name of the First Nations traditional country where you love to walk.

What are yours? Share your pics and traditional country names below. 👇

Yesterday marked the beginning of NAIDOC Week, with the theme "The next generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy" offering a powerful opportunity to highlight the urgent need for prevention and resources to tackle acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) - conditions that continue to disproportionately affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

💔 First Nations children aged 5–14 are most at risk.

ARF and RHD are preventable, yet they remain a serious health issue across many communities. Early prevention, community education and culturally appropriate care are vital steps forward.

Let’s walk alongside community leaders, health workers and families to keep young hearts strong - for generations to come. 📘

Explore and share these community-friendly ARF and RHD resources today. HeartKids

Last week, NSW Police Force made the life-threatening decision to end a trial of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in police patrol cars, and remove the units entirely.

As outlined here for 7NEWS Sydney and in an opinion piece on the Daily Telegraph by Heart Foundation CEO David Lloyd, the reasons given by NSW Police are grossly incorrect and both NSW Premier Chris Minns and Police Minister Yasmin Catley MP must urgently intervene to reverse this life-threatening decision.

AEDs are easy and safe for anyone to use. They are not optional – they are essential to saving a person in cardiac arrest.

Yesterday was a BIG day for heart health in Australia, as new to***co laws came into full effect, changing the way to***co products are sold, and what they look and feel like for people who smoke. 🚭 These changes...

✅ REDUCE the appeal of ci******es and other to***co products.

✅ Ensure the harms of smoking are CLEAR.

✅ Help make it easier for people to QUIT, stay quit, and not start in the first place.

To***co smoke is one of the main risk factors for heart disease and is responsible for 12% of the burden (death and illness) of cardiovascular disease in Australia. Quitting is one of the most impactful things you can do to lower your risk of a heart attackor stroke.

More information about these changes, including a consumer fact sheet, can be found on the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing website 📍 https://www.health.gov.au/to***co-changes

Quit support can be found by phoning 13 QUIT or at www.quit.org.au

Cindy’s journey with STEMI and heart spasms is a powerful reminder that heart disease doesn’t always look the same in women 💔🔍

Too often, women’s symptoms are misdiagnosed or dismissed. Cindy experienced a serious cardiac event, but unlike a typical STEMI, her coronary arteries weren’t blocked. Instead, a severe spasm during an angiogram saw her artery to narrow by 90%, relieved only by IV medication.

Now she has been diagnosed with vasospastic angina, a lesser-known condition where arteries that supply blood to the heart suddenly spasm, restricting blood flow. The diagnosis changed her life. Cindy found support, began nursing training, and is now advocating for better recognition of heart spasms - because many others have stories just like hers.

A heart-healthy eating pattern is based on a combination of foods chosen regularly over time! The 5 steps of a heart-healthy eating pattern are ⤵️

1️⃣ Plenty of fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals 🥕

2️⃣ Healthy proteins especially fish, seafood, legumes, nuts and seeds with smaller amounts of eggs and lean poultry. Limit lean red meat to 1-3 times a week 🐟

3️⃣ Unflavoured milk, yoghurt and cheese. People with high blood cholesterol or heart disease should choose reduced fat varieties 🥛

4️⃣ Healthy fat choices like nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and their oils for cooking 🥑

5️⃣ Herbs and spices to flavour foods, instead of adding salt 🌿

We have so much info on our website to help you eat healthy! Get started on your healthy eating journey TODAY 👉https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/healthy-living/healthy-eating/heart-healthy-eating-pattern
