MENTAL HEALTH | This morning we were excited to join Stride Mental Health in welcoming Emma McBride MP to officially open the Devonport Medicare Mental Health Centre.

The centre - at 11-17 Stewart Street - gives locals a new option for accessing free and confidential mental health information, services and support.

It is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm, and people can just walk in – no appointment or referral is needed.

The friendly centre team - including mental health workers plus peer worker Tony Read, who has lived experience of mental health challenges - is ready to help, and has already supported about 15 people who have walked through the doors.

Great to also have Anne Urquhart MP and Senator Josh Dolega join us today.

HEALTH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION | Going beyond the basics on treatment-resistant depression (TRD)

On Monday 8 September, we held a hybrid event with a panel of experts exploring both established and emerging treatment options for TRD.

Speakers and panel members included Professor Malcolm Hopwood, Professor Saxby Pridmore, Dr Arnob Chakraborti, Dr Marzena Rybak, Dr Yvonne Turnier-Shea and Dr Anna Seth.

The session covered TRD assessment, referral pathways across public and private sectors, and emerging therapies such as esketamine, transcranial magnetic stimulation, electroconvulsive therapy, and adjunctive approaches.

Engagement in the panel discussion was strong, with 45 people attending online and 22 in the room.

We were delighted with the feedback, including comments such as:
“The information was very relevant and informative” and “Local knowledge is very handy.”

WORLD SU***DE PREVENTION DAY | Changing the narrative on su***de.

Today, 10 September, is World Su***de Prevention Day. The 2024–2026 theme, Changing the narrative on su***de, calls on us to move from silence and stigma toward openness, understanding, and support. Every conversation matters.

At Primary Health Tasmania, we encourage people to take part in free online 'gatekeeper training' to build the skills and confidence to start a conversation with, and respond to, someone who may be at risk of su***de.

Free licences are available on our website for two short courses:
• Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) – QPR Institute
• Recognise and Respond – Black Dog Institute (available until 30 September)

Visit tasp.hn/community-su***de-prevention for more information.
