🤰 Doulas are trained professionals who provide emotional and physical support to parents and parents-to-be during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. Establishing that known person during pregnacy, and having that supportive relationship built with your doula has shown to reduce anxiety for not only mums but also support people heading into birth! How amazing is that! 👏

That moment when I realised when I do postpartum massage that my face is usually in deep concentration or listening to mumma talk 😂

As part of my postpartum package at the end of the 6 week block I offer my doula clients in home postpartum massage. We usually start with an Epsom salt foot soak with essential oils and herbs, and then head into a full body or shoulder massage depending on what the mum would like. I set the space, and pop on a bit of relaxing music. I bring my massage table with me too so we get that full experience happening!

Is it actually early labour? What are some of the signs? 👇

🤰 Early labour signs can start around 37 to 42 weeks gestation, and they do vary, you may even notice them sooner, such as baby "dropping" around 36 weeks. This is when baby's head descends into the pelvis and it can be more obvious with your first pregnancy.

So, unpacking with the most obvious:
⚡️Contractions or Surges
Contractions or surges might feel like period pain to start with, and then become more regular, stronger and longer are a good indication that this is labour.

🔴 Bloody show or loosing your mucous plug
This indicates cervical changes are happening and that your cervix may be starting to shorten, soften and dilate

💧Membranes breaking
Your waters will not always break as you go into labour, but if they do it is a sign that labour is either starting or may be soon. Call your care provider if your waters do break and be sure to note the colour of your waters.

🔙 Back pain or pelvic pain
This can be baby moving into position.

💩 Diarrhoea
Getting the need to p**p, or having lots of loose stools before going into labour is a little preparation technique some of our bodies undergo as they clear out and make room for baby.

💖Intuition
Your body and mind will know if you are in tune with yourself, although you might not realise its early labour, you may have a desire to stay home or close to home, or just to rest a little more.

Did you know this is where your cesarean scar sits if you have a C section during birth? This is why high waisted un**es can be really comforting because typical rise underwear can really irritate the surgical site.

What is a doula? 🤰

A doula is a trained non medical professional who provides women and their partners with emotional, physical and informational support during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

Every doula has different training and backgrounds so it is important to ask what the doula you are considering has. Personally, I have done over 2 years of university tertiary education in midwifery before becoming a doula.

A doula educates parents on physiological birth so women are fully informed to make choices about their own body, birth and baby with confidence.

I have had many requests from birth workers after seeing my packages that I use for my doula families, to be able to purchase my PFDs. These resources have taken me hours to carefully put together and I have now adjusted them into template form. Slowly these will become available on my etsy store with my other digital products.

My etsy store has resources for mothers and families, and resources now for BIRTH WORKERS. 👏

These resources do require prior birth education and training to be able to use them to guide families through, without this they will be a little confusing. So with that out of the way, let me introduce MODULE 1, Birth goals and birth imprints.

Check out the link in my bio for my etsy store if you are on instagram or click the link here if you are on facebook. https://thebirthdoulaau.etsy.com?coupon=SAVE20

Use the code SAVE20 for the next week to save 20% off this package as a launch special.

We need to touch on this, and I wish we didn't, but TELLING a pregnant mum WHAT you are going to do to her is not ASKING her for her consent. 👏

Have you heard these phrases? 👇
"I am just going to do a vaginal exam now"
"We just need to put these monitors on"
"I need to check your uterus is shrinking back down"

These are statements and none of them are asking if these things can be done to you. They are 'telling' phrases. You have the right over your own body in a birth space, even in the hospital and even if people have told you to 'leave your dignity at the door.' No one should be doing anything to you without asking you and then receiving a fully informed Y E S!

Were you ever in a birthing space where you were just told what was going to be done to you and not asked? Share your story 👇
