Great step forward for the profession. Well done NT Health and all the people that worked tremendously hard in the background to make this happen.

Northern Territory recognition of Paramedic

The Northern Territory (NT) Commissioner for Public Employment has issued a Variation to Determination Number 3 of 1999 by inserting a new role for Paramedic/Senior Paramedic (Urgent Care).https://ocpe.nt.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/1513917/variation-to-determination-3-of-1999.PDF

The Commissioner for Public Sector Employment may issue determinations relating to employment in the Public Service. The practical effect of this variation is to allow NT Health to employ Paramedics directly in a range of public sector health positions.

This move is similar to earlier developments in the general recognition of paramedics as health professionals in Victoria https://bit.ly/3LZdEzq and Tasmania. https://tinyurl.com/yvyxrbe4

These changes are significant by removing any doubt as to the professional status of paramedicine as a registered health profession and ensuring that the definition of paramedic is aligned with the National Law, and is not linked to employment by an ambulance service. https://tinyurl.com/3sr6khxd

The Observer extends thanks to those who have helped to introduce these changes that bring the recognition of paramedicine into line with the contemporary legal registration framework.
