Today is the start of National Diabetes Week and we want to highlight the importance of looking after our body, preventing and managing diabetes!

Diabetes is something that can happen to anyone, but there are ways that we can work to prevent and manage diabetes well.

Eating healthy foods, moving our body every day and keeping our body clean (particularly our feet) can all mean that we live well with diabetes.

The theme for this NAIDOC is "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy" and it has really got us thinking about the work that we are doing to uplift and educate our next generation. A large aspect of our work is education, through both our school based sessions, community yarns and our workforce training days. We recognise the importance of our next generation of podiatrists and upskilling clinicians in the workforce.

We work with communities to educate to create change, we want to see more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Podiatrists and health clinicians, we want people to have a deeper understanding of their health and how to advocate within the health system and we want to see less people experiencing diabetes-related foot complications.

We want to spark conversations and have these continue around the kitchen table. Growing up, I was always told about the impact of the kitchen table and how this was the place that the real change was made. So go home, have conversations around foot health, remove any shame around feet and ask how people are moving, let's create a change in the amount of foot problems that we are seeing.

Reminder to keep your feet clean, keep them dry and go to the health service if you have any concerns at all.

We don't take a lot of photos during our sessions, to protect people's privacy and because we are focused solely on the sessions, but here are a few photos from school visits and careers expos!

Happy NAIDOC Week you mob! Arguably the best week of the year (according to Courtney) and we are making the most of it!

This week we will have a stall at the NAIDOC in the North event on Wednesday. Come have a yarn about foot health and pick up some freebies! We will also be attending various other events around town, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and getting amongst all the activities.

It's Men's Health Week!

We want to encourage all men to get their annual 715 health check and ask your GP about a visit to the podiatrist if you have any concerns about your feet. If you have diabetes, it is important to get your feet checked yearly, even if you think they are going pretty well.

This men's health week, chat to your mates about prioritising your health.

You are our Dads/Uncles/Brothers/Nephews/Partners - we need you to look after your health to be around for a long time!

I was lucky enough to be supported by LK Law to complete my Master of Public Health in 2022. This scholarship allowed me to broaden my knowledge and skillset and supported me to obtain the role that I am in now, as Community Engagement and Education Officer for WSWT.

I am grateful for this opportunity and the opportunity to highlight our work.

💬 “One student told me after our session she decided she wanted to be a scientist, and it was the best day of her life.”

Eastern Arrernte/Tanganekald woman, Courtney Hammond completed her Masters at SAHMRI thanks to a generous scholarship from LK Law.

Their support has helped Courtney focus on her project and make sure its full potential was reached.

Yesterday we spent the day at the Reconciliation in the West event held at Tauondi Aboriginal College. It was an incredible day connecting with community, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and engaging in meaningful conversations around reconciliation.

It was great to chat with so many of you about foot health and how we can keep our feet strong and healthy, to strengthen our community. We particularly enjoyed seeing all of your designs on our foot print wall and watching the wall grow during the day.

National Reconciliation Week - what does it mean to you?

Our Community Engagement and Education Officer Courtney shares what reconciliation and Reconciliation Week mean to her.

The theme of "Bridging Now to Next" encourages us to recognise the history of Australia, the tireless work of people before us and drives us to continue this work and strengthen the future for our mob.

Good morning!

On Friday, Saraid and Natalie were in Port Augusta, working at Pika Wiya in the Podiatry clinic and providing foot training to some of the workers.

It was a great day and a great opportunity to upskill around foot health.

Let us know if you want us to provide free training in your area and keep an eye on posts for upcoming dates!

Pay It Forward Day – April 28 🧡

Kindness is powerful — it can lift a heavy heart, brighten someone’s day and even support better mental health.

This April 28, let’s celebrate Pay It Forward Day by showing small acts of kindness that ripple through our communities. Whether it’s:
✨ Checking in on someone who's been quiet
✨ Sharing a cuppa and a yarn
✨ Lending a hand or offering a smile
✨ Taking an Elder for a drive out bush
✨ Or just letting someone know they’re not alone

Kindness doesn’t have to cost a thing, but it can mean everything.

Looking after each other is how we stay strong — and looking after our mental health is just as important as physical health. A kind word or a listening ear could be just what someone needs.
