“But what do OTs actually do?”
It’s a question I still get - even after 20 years in the field. Sometimes it even comes from close friends and family. And honestly? I don’t blame them. OT can be tricky to explain in a simple, clear way - even for us!
And no – I’m not an occ health and safety officer! 😄 That one comes up more than you’d think!
Occupational Therapy is one of those professions that’s deeply impactful, yet often misunderstood. The people we work with feel the difference it makes… but even they sometimes struggle to describe what OT is.
The thing is - ‘occupation’ isn’t just about paid work (which is what most people assume).
Occupation is everything we do that brings meaning, structure, and connection to our lives.
Yes, that might include work - but also includes activities we do in everyday life. Showering. Playing. Driving. Socialising. Parenting. Cooking. Caring. Creating. Resting.
Occupation is everything that makes up daily life.
When injury, illness, stress, trauma or major life transitions get in the way, OTs help people adapt and reconnect with what matters most.
OT is science-based, evidence-informed, and grounded in deep understanding of the human body, brain, relationships, environment and wellbeing.
The word ‘occupation’ might sound simple - but it’s not.
It holds layers of meaning that reflect just how complex (and human) we all are.
Here at Kemar Meaningful Directions, our work is rooted in this understanding. It’s what sets us apart.
We know that mental health and meaningful daily living are deeply intertwined - and that’s why Occupational Therapy is such a vital part of the picture.
OT can often be the missing link to good mental health. I’m passionate about helping people reconnect with what matters.
That’s the heart of Occupational Therapy - and it’s one of the philosophies that underpins what we do at Kemar - where OT and Psychology come together in a truly holistic way.
