The first instalment of Silly Statements. I’m hoping to break down statements / claims which are misleading in how they are worded. This first one focuses on nutrition / diet and autism. But I have so many more of these silly statements up my sleeve!

It was hard to articulate this one in plain language, because I’ve been in science for 12ish years now. Let me know if you’re still unsure what the difference is and I’ll do my best to clarify.

Hi 🙋🏼‍♀️ I’ve been absent for a couple weeks because I *finally* did something not work-related for myself… I went to New York. Many of my comfort TV shows and movies growing up were set in New York, so it has been a dream of mine to visit this city. Here are some highlights 🥹

1. Brownstones
2. The Met steps
3. GIANT PIGEON!
4. “I’ll never walk Cornelia St again”
5. “I thought I saw you at The Bus Stop… I didn’t, though”
6. “Your heartbeat on The High Line, once in twenty lifetimes”
7. 23 Cornelia St
8. Central Perk (FRIENDS TV set)
9. Chandler & Joey’s apartment (FRIENDS TV set)
10. Joey wears all Chandler’s clothes (FRIENDS TV set)

Too often, ADHD medication is seen as a tool to help us conform to social and capitalist norms. This might “work” for a little while… but, in my clinical experience, it often fuels a boom-bust cycle which can ultimately result in chronic stress and poor mental health—and Autistic burnout, for our AuDHDers.

So this is a little gentle reminder to reflect on our motivations for taking ADHD medication. Ask yourself, “am I motivated by the idea of me or my kids finding it slightly easier to conform to expectations around productivity, work, school, societal norms?

Instead, how can I use this increased capacity to instead invest in the things that matter most to me? What do I need to do to feel well?”

E.g. planning and prioritising self-care, relationships, rest, meals, pursuing our interests, or simply getting through the day with less cumulative stress.

Small steps Autistic people can take which move toward healing social traumas for ourselves & our community. Online advocacy spaces really stress me out sometimes & I often need to go offline for a while. So here is the second installment of this post format I introduced last week. I hope it helps shift things here even a little.

A lot of autism resources & services are inadequate, misinformed, & even harmful. Community is essential for sharing useful information & support. We are powerful when we work toward collective learning & our shared goals.

When noticing an emotional reaction, such as anger or the urge to “call out” neurokin for sharing something potentially harmful, it is essential to pause & regulate before unknowingly perpetuating cycles of trauma & shame.

Shaming (perpetuates cycles of trauma: I engage whilst angry or frustrated, publicly calling them out & labelling their behaviour as harmful or morally wrong. If I do not feel in control, I double down & demand they take accountability. I publish this on my platform knowing it could incite online harrassment.

Healing (moved towards healing): I communicate my concerns with curiosity & without labelling or accusing them. If I do not feel regulated enough to engage in this way, instead share accurate information on my platform without calling anyone out.

Small steps Autistic people can take which move toward healing social traumas for ourselves & our community.

Reminder to self: In online spaces, I deserve to not have my ideas dismissed when I communicate them in an Autistic way. But no one owes me this. I cannot demand this from others. I can set boundaries & disengage if others cannot respect those boundaries.

Reminder to self: When I disagree with another person in online spaces (regardless of their neurotype), they have a right to choose to disengage. I cannot demand that they engage on my terms, or shame them for disengaging. This is harmful.

Demands can perpetuate social & relational traumas. Boundaries & emotional responsibility help us move toward healing.

Demand: They chose to disengage & did not take accountability for harm they caused. I will continue to comment or DM them to demand they re-engage & acknowledge the harm they have caused.

Boundary: I’m feeling angry that they are not acknowledging the impact of what they said. I will step away from this interaction to regulate & reflect on my needs in this moment.

Demand: “You’re tone policing me which is unacceptable. I won’t change how I’m speaking to you. You need to listen to what I have to say.”

Boundary: “I did not say you were a bad person. I use my literal words to communicate & don’t hint at things. This is an important issue to me so I don’t have the capacity to mask. I welcome you to ask me to clarify what I mean or check your interpretation.”

Birthdays can be hard for Autistic people. I thought I’d capture just some of the challenges which ✨some✨ Autistic people experience, so some things may not resonate with you or seem applicable to your loved one. I’ve tried to make it relevant for both kids and adults.

This post is mostly informed by clinical experience (and a little lived experience - don’t sing happy birthday to me! 🫠)
