Three new measles cases in recently returned overseas travellers have been reported in Victoria.

💉 People born during or after 1966 who have not had two doses of MMR vaccine, or are unsure of their vaccination status, are advised to get vaccinated for measles.

👶 Infants aged 6 to 11 months can receive a state-funded dose of MMR vaccine prior to overseas travel through their GP or Aboriginal Health Service.

ℹ️ Measles is a highly infectious viral disease that can lead to uncommon but serious complications, such as pneumonia and brain inflammation (encephalitis).

👉 Exposure: New public exposure sites have been identified.
People who have attended the listed exposure sites, during the specified dates and times contained within the link below, should monitor for symptoms of measles.

⚠️ Symptoms: Anyone who develops symptoms of measles should seek medical care. Wear a mask and call ahead to make sure you can be isolated from others.

Wimmera mothers will soon have access to a dedicated midwife throughout pregnancy and up to 10 days after birth, with Grampians Health set to launch its new Midwifery Antenatal and Postnatal Service (MAPS) next month.

The new model will ensure continuity of care, providing a positive and safe environment with the support of 10 midwives recruited to the program at Horsham Maternity Outpatients Clinic.

An open day will be held at the Horsham Maternity Clinic on Tuesday 3 February, 2pm–4pm, giving the community a chance to meet the MAPS midwives and learn more about the service.

Your risk of harm from severe heat is worsened by fires and smoke.

If fire is likely then plan to leave early.

During the fire and heat season it is important to know that your risk factors for harm from severe heat put you at an increased risk of harm from bushfire or grassfire smoke also. Heat can be fatal, and some people are more at risk.

Smoke and fires in the landscape and severe heat together can greatly increase a person’s risk of health harm in a number of ways, so if fire is likely then plan to leave early.

If you stay:
- You may not be able to get or stay cool
- You may lose power or run out of water
- You may not be able to leave later
- Your health condition may worsen suddenly
- You may need urgent help for your health condition
- Health providers may not be able to get to you

Two doses of the measles vaccine are required for best, lifelong protection.

🛡️Adults aged 20-59 years may not have received a second dose and do not realise they are at increased risk of measles infection.

If you are over 60, you’re likely immune due to past exposure to measles in childhood, before there was widespread vaccination.

If you were born during or after 1966 and haven’t had two doses, or don't know how many you’ve had, get vaccinated. Extra doses are safe.

We are looking to extend our successful new pet therapy program to our Horsham campus after a positive response from Ballarat and Stawell patients and nursing staff.

Delivered through Volunteer Services, the program is supported by Ballarat-based organisation Paws On Wards with the aim of enhancing emotional well-being and comfort in a clinical setting. It is provided to the wards and care communities in Ballarat and Stawell, bringing the benefits of animal-assisted therapy to patients, residents, staff and visitors.

“Witnessing the pet therapy program in action is such a moving experience. The dogs bring a real sense of calm and positivity. They help reduce anxiety and provoke real moments of happiness, providing connection through compassion," said Manager Volunteer Services in Ballarat and Stawell, Leah Ferguson.

“We would love to see patients and residents in Horsham getting the same benefits from the program. For this to happen, we will need the support of local dog owners.”

Director of Paws On Wards Kath Phillips wants to hear from dog owners in the Horsham region who think their pet might be ideal for the program.

Kath wants to hear from dog owners across the region who are interested in participating in the program. She has invited them to contact her at admin@pawsonwards.inrange.net.au or phone 0412 377 368.

As a healthcare service, we are proud to care for a community made up of many cultures, faiths and belief systems.

World Religion Day (today) is an opportunity to recognise the richness that this diversity brings to our workplaces, our patients and their families.

We honour the traditions, practices and values that shape people’s lives and we reaffirm our commitment to providing care that is respectful, inclusive and culturally safe for everyone.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers, patients, visitors and community members who help create an environment where all beliefs are welcomed and understood.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that causes a skin rash and fever. It can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications.

Measles virus is very common in other parts of the world and people exposed overseas can spread the virus rapidly in Australia to people who are not immune.

You need two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine for protection.

If you haven’t had two doses, or you don’t know, get vaccinated.

🔥 Community Health Update: Fire & Heat Safety

Smoke from fires is still causing very poor air quality across much of Victoria. These conditions may continue for some time.
Go to our website for more detailed information of the messaging below: https://www.gh.org.au/gphu/

Protect your health:
🔹Stay indoors when it’s smoky
🔹Keep windows and doors closed; block gaps with wet towels
🔹Switch off air cons that pull air from outside
🔹Wearing a properly fitted N95 mask if you must go out can help when it is very smoky
🔹If you feel unwell, contact your doctor or call NURSE ON CALL: 1300 60 60 24
🔹In an emergency, always call Triple Zero 000.

Heat safety:
Recent extreme heat can still affect your body. Drink plenty of water, stay cool, avoid the hottest part of the day, and check in on family and friends.

Other important reminders:
🔹Power outages: Food that’s no longer cold must be eaten within 4 hours or thrown out
🔹Tank water: Ash can contaminate drinking water. If it looks, smells or tastes unusual, don’t drink it
🔹Mental health: Extreme weather and emergencies can take a toll. Free support is available across Victoria

Risks from respiratory and other infections:
Influenza A, COVID19, and RSV respiratory infections are being seen across our community at higher levels than usual.
🔹Stay home and rest if you have symptoms.
🔹Protect others by wearing a mask if you have to go out. People at high risk of severe impacts should make sure to keep their vaccinations up to date.

Potentially deadly Japanese encephalitis virus has been detected in mosquitoes in our region this summer.
🔹Protect yourself from mosquito bites by covering up with light clothing, avoiding being outside at dawn and dusk, and using a personal insect repellant containing picaridin.

✈️ Don’t catch measles on your holiday! Make sure you’re fully vaccinated against measles before you travel overseas. 2 doses are required for best, lifelong protection. 🛡️

If you’re not sure how many doses you’ve had, see your healthcare provider at least 6 weeks before your trip for a catch-up measles vaccination.

If you need two doses of the measles vaccine, these are given at least four weeks apart. It is also best to receive your final vaccine at least two weeks before you depart, to allow your body time to develop immunity. It is important to factor these timings into your travel plans.
