For the first time, our Horsham GH At Home team have access to their own portable ECG unit and bladder scanner, allowing them to deliver hospital-level care right in the comfort of patients' homes, and it is all thanks to our community donors. 💚

Previously, this equipment had to be borrowed from the acute ward but now the new equipment is dedicated to the GH At Home service, supporting up to 20 patients a day.

“These items will make our patients’ journeys a lot easier because they will be able to receive more of their care at home.” said GH At Home coordinator Janet Johnson.

A huge thank you to our local community for making this possible. 👏

“It just proves that every contribution, no matter what size, can help us provide deliver care that is responsive to local community needs.” said Chief Operating Officer Hospitals Ben Kelly.

Our organisation has recently transitioned to become an independent renal hub, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of care for those with chronic kidney disease across the region.

Previously part of the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s satellite network, our renal units in Ballarat and Horsham will now be fully managed by Grampians Health. This new hub status means a significant enhancement in the medical and nursing capabilities in renal medicine, the introduction of surgical services for renal patients, and an increase in the number of specialist nursing roles to support those with advanced kidney ailments.

“This is a major step forward in how we care for people in our region,” said Chief Executive Officer Dale Fraser.

As part of this transition, we have also become the first in Victoria to install the latest Fresenius 6008 haemodialysis machines. Horsham’s Dialysis Associate Nurse Unit Manager Cathy Tischler said her team was very pleased to have the new upgraded machines.

“We are working with the very latest in technology at all seven stations,” Ms Tischler said. “We are currently treating 14 patients three times a week from Monday to Saturday in Horsham and soon we will be increasing that to 16 patients, so the new machines are a welcome change.”

With the appointment of Aboriginal Health Liaison Officer Sandy Stinten, we've expanded our support for First Nations people across our western campuses.

A proud Gunai/Kurnai woman from East Gippsland, Sandy brings a wealth of experience in family counselling, community support, and NDIS coordination. She's joined forces with colleague Danae McDonald to ensure First Nations patients, clients and staff feel supported, heard and respected across Horsham, Dimboola, Edenhope and Stawell.

“It’s a great role and I’m really enjoying it,” Sandy said. “Danae and I are sharing the travelling so that we are both a constant presence at each of the campuses every week."

Danae said the appointment of Sandy was important in helping to extend their support.

“We’ve been working in well together and Sandy has settled in comfortably with her role,” Danae said.

Horsham grandmother Betty Etherton is thankful for the simple items that help her stay independent—like a bed stick, overbed table, and adjustable chair—all provided by our Horsham palliative care team and funded by Wimmera Hospice Auxiliary.

Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2019, Betty said, “I was supposed to be dead two years ago, but here I am still living independently and the equipment provided by the palliative care team has made that possible,”

“It’s made things a lot better for me to stay at home and I’m trying to do that for as long as possible.”

Acting Chief People Officer Tamara Reynolds said Wimmera Hospice Auxiliary made an enormous contribution to the comfort of the region’s palliative patients.

“This hard-working team is constantly coming up with new projects while still making the most of the regular fundraisers that they organise,” Tamara said. “Their level of contribution in supporting our palliative team is massive.”

This week, we're recognising the incredible network of care that supports people living with a stoma — including families, carers, and healthcare professionals who walk beside them every step of the way.

Horsham-based stomal therapy nurse Bernadette Beahan plays a vital role in this network, providing specialist care across the Wimmera Mallee region. From helping individuals adjust physically and emotionally to life with a stoma — whether temporary or permanent — Bernadette’s goal is to see her patients not just adapt, but thrive.

“An ostomate is someone who has a stoma, which is a surgically created opening in the digestive or urinary system,” Ms Beahan said.

Bernadette recognises she can’t do her work alone.

“I want to acknowledge the substantial contribution made by my clinician colleagues for their expertise and care for our ostomates. And more importantly is the contribution and support given by family and carers to their loved ones living with a stoma,' she said.

♥ Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia. Every 4 minutes, one Australian has a heart attack or stroke^. Don’t wait – make a date for a Heart Health Check.

🩺 A Heart Health Check is a checkup with your GP to assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years. If you are aged 45 and over with no history of heart disease, we recommend you see your doctor for a Heart Health Check. Some people may be eligible earlier, including First Nations peoples from 30 years, and from 35 years for people living with diabetes. It’s simple and takes around 20 minutes.

Heart Health Checks are covered by Medicare and are free at practices that bulk bill this service. Ask your GP about the cost of your Heart Health Check before your visit.

📍 Have you visited a measles exposure location? See the full exposure list at https://www.health.vic.gov.au/health-alerts/measles-public-exposure-sites-victoria

Anyone who develops symptoms of measles should seek medical care and testing for measles. Wear a face mask and call ahead to make sure you can be isolated from others. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that causes a skin rash and fever. It can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications.

2 doses of the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) are required for the best protection. If you don’t know if you’ve had two doses of MMR, consult with your healthcare provider about getting another dose. Visit your GP or pharmacy for a catch-up MMR vaccine.

You can check if you have been immunised on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR). Learn more about immunisation records at https://my.gh.org.au/4kACt5l

While celebrating its 100th year of service, the Wimmera Base Hospital Ladies Auxiliary has been at its most industrious with donations for the purchase of new equipment.

President Denise Quayle and treasurer Elaine Morrison are pictured delivering the latest cheque to Grampians Health Horsham site manager Maree Markby.

The cheque for $90,000 will pay for a washer and probe for the Maternity Outpatients Clinic, a skin mesher and blades as well as a sagittal saw for the operating suite and a Telehealth unit for the Intensive Care Unit.

Ms Markby thanked the auxiliary for their outstanding contributions.

“We are so grateful of the work the auxiliary does because they ensure our teams are working with the most modern equipment available, which in turn provides the utmost safety of both our team and our patients,” Ms Markby said.

“I look forward to celebrating 100 years with the auxiliary members later this year.”
