This little group has been on my heart for a long time and will hopefully be getting off the ground this term. We are going to be catching up on the next few Mondays at the Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space as a starting point.

The intention of the group is to create inclusive social opportunities for kids who may not be verbal communicators, for whatever reason. My 10yo has Down syndrome and loves kids, but the communication barrier is real.

Anyone is welcome to join, but the focus is on slowing down and parents (or support workers or other trusted adults) joining in and supporting the kids to have meaningful interactions and make genuine connections at their own pace.

* If you are not homeschooling but your child doesn’t or isn’t attending school on a Monday right now, feel free to join us!

| Teens Minecraft Group |

I am just about to send out my invitations to my Minecraft Groups for Term 1 and would love to see if there are any teens interested in joining a group specific for 13+ years. There is enough that I can see there is an interest in this, but would love just a few more group members as it works better for the kids.

Sessions are run weekly on my private server, they are specifically low demand but with topics around social-emotional development as guided by the kids or by goals that you let me know about.

The teens group will be on a Friday afternoon, and will be tailored to group members. The groups tend to include lots of natural as well as guided learning about friendships, online safety, communication, collaboration, understanding others perspectives, self advocacy etc

These are covered under NDIS as I run them as an Occupational Therapist, but depending on your cover, some private health also offer rebates.

Please message me here or email your interest through, I am also always very happy to answer any questions you've got 🥰

Thanks 💜

Perth homeschooling friends -

This little group will be getting off the ground this term now that the weather is improving. We are going to be catching up on the next few Fridays at Yokine Reserve Playground as a starting point.

The intention of the group is to create inclusive social opportunities for kids who may not be verbal communicators, for whatever reason. My 9yo has Down syndrome and loves kids, but the communication barrier is real.

Anyone is welcome to join, but the focus is on slowing down and parents (or support workers or other trusted adults) joining in and supporting the kids to have meaningful interactions and make genuine connections at their own pace.

It is always so good to hear from the Dad’s. But this list he rattles off as to how hard it is parenting kids with a disability (this is not usually due to the kids but our current social expectations and constructs being the total opposite of helpful if you don’t have a neurotypically functioning child) clearly shows how much better parents need to be supported.

What would make your days feel a little lighter?

Did you know that when I first started working with kids more than 20 years ago, Occupational Therapy sessions were done in 10 week blocks, then you went to the bottom of the waiting list again? I know a lot has changed since then (thankfully!) but one of the challenges NDIS brings with paediatric therapy is the loss of natural breaks from therapy.

There is a fear of losing funding if you aren't using it.

There is a fear of losing your therapist if you stop attending.

There is a fear that your child will miss out on vital development if therapy isn't constant.

Whilst I can never guarantee anything in NDIS-land, it is not likely that you will lose funding simply through having a break. And communication with your therapist is essential if you are worried that you will lose you place. This can be a real fear, particularly with clinics that have processes in place to help keep them in business - but don't ever hesitate to ask the question, especially if you or your child are struggling or just exhausted from life.

The demands on families of kids with disabilities is huge (they are the ones expected to carry the load and do all the work...but that's a conversation for another day), and it is ok to reduce some of those demands BEFORE you reach burnout, as burnout ain't fun for anyone.

Natural opportunities to use spare cognitive and emotional energy to integrate skills can produce incredibly real results, ones that I see in my own home.

Reducing demands, reduces stress, which allows the brain to operate from a space of being able to learn, remember and regulate so much easier.

So if you feel like you're on a bit of hamster wheel that you need to jump from for a while, be assured that everyone will be perfectly ok.

This sounds wonderful but the Queensland government are actually pouring millions of dollars into harmful ABA centres.

This is not where your tax money should be going. ABA seeks to change kids to behave in neurotypical ways, it creates burnout and significant mental health issues which all negatively influence the entire family, their communities and society as a whole.

Creating future jobs for healthcare perhaps?? 🤔

Ooooh, this is 🥰

Love to hear collaboration with signing experts (🤞that they were also Deaf or HoH) and just for different, equal, valid ways of communication 🙌
