“DANCING IN THE DARK” is … The Funnest Fitness Ever !
Every Tuesday night we turn off the lights, turn up the retro dance hits and just boogie away our calories and stress for an hour. It’s awesome … and it’s pretty dark, but not pitch black. Your eyes adjust and you can see silhouettes dancing in the hall around you so there’s no danger of collisions, and it inspires you to shed any inhibitions you might have and dance like nobody’s watching. At “Dancing in the Dark” you can dress however you like and dance however you feel (no steps to learn) with no fear of being judged or hassled.
If you are not a confident dancer or a snazzy dresser or in great shape it doesn’t matter; the darkness levels everything out. It’s a drug and alcohol (and idiot) free zone; we make sure it’s totally safe so you can just let go and enjoy.
Music wise, we play classic “definite dance” tracks from Spotify; mainly up-tempo and we aim for a little bit of everything to suit every taste. From pop, to dance, to swing, to folk, to rock, to latin, to hip-hop, to disco & soul, to super cheesy top 40; from the 50’s to the 00’s (& a few of today’s best tracks) – those classic favourites you will probably know well, so don’t be surprised if you can’t resist singing along. The playlist is finalised the night before the session and changes every week and we are happy to take your requests so you can dance to your own faves (and we promise not to play the same song more than twice a year so you’ll never get bored of the same songs).
Dancing is one of the very best ways to exercise (according to many studies). It’s great fun and it’s just like meditating as you lose yourself in the music and work up a glorious sweat! Whether you’re 21 or 81, whether you're a beginner booty-shaker or someone whose “hips don’t lie”, you can dance to your own intensity level and have a breather whenever you like. This is a great space to get better acquainted with your “inner-dancer”, and this hour-long dance jam will certainly clear your mind and give you a great workout. But there's one more thing; a recent Sydney University study has concluded that Dancing in the Dark is great for your mental health as well. Wow so many benefits!
“Dancing in the Dark” is Mindfulness, Fitness & Fun – all in one.
And our dancers say they sleep better after Dancing in the Dark! So come along & let loose with us. There’s normally 8 -10 of us from almost every age group and background and it’s a nice bunch of people. You don't need to bring a partner; most of us come solo and dance separately but the great thing is… you still feel part of the group. It’s like a tribe, with everyone dancing together… in their own particular way, in their own particular space. You are bound to make new friends and go home buzzing with a big smile on your face (you might say we are “Happiness Providers”).
Our regular dancers love losing themselves in the music and talking during the session can interrupt that; so we ask that any talking is left for afterwards (unless it’s really necessary). Singing along and whooping after a great song is totally cool though.
Admission is only $10 cash at the door but if it’s your first time (or you haven’t been in the last year) the cost is just $5.
All abilities are welcome and yes we are wheel chair accessible. All ages & families are welcome and it is best to RSVP please. If you have any questions don't hesitate to call or text Roo on 0428 252511.
You’ll find us dancing in the multi-purpose rooms on the western side of the Lennox Head Cultural Centre in Mackney Lane at Lennox Head every Tuesday from 7pm to 8pm. If you park in the carpark on the western side of the Cultural Centre (not the eastern side) and walk towards the centre you will easily find us. Just dress comfy and bring a water bottle and your happy feet !
We also operate at Alstonville / Wollongbar on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. Check out the Featured post on our pages “Dancing in the Dark Lennox Head” or “Dancing in the Dark Alstonville” for more info.
“Dancing in the Dark” is … Fitness that actually is Fun!
PS. If you RSVP but find that you can’t come after all, then please tell us so we can give your spot to someone else.
PPS. Yes, you can wear Lycra … and we normally have a break over the Christmas school holidays.
CONCERNING COVID-19, PLEASE NOTE…
- Please don’t come if you have any symptoms or are at risk of spreading Covid-19. Thank you for helping protect us all … and keep dancing!
