Love skiing? Have you heard of Skier’s thumb? Commonly seen in skiers, as well as rugby, netball and basketball players, it happens when the thumb is forced outwards beyond the limit of its movement range. The ligaments that hold the joint together at the base of the thumb sprain or tear leading to pain, swelling, and loss of function of the thumb which can affect the ability to use the hand in everyday tasks.

Sprained your thumb recently? Never leave it to chance, come and see us today. We’ll be sure to give you the thumbs up when it’s safe to return to the slopes! 👍🏼

Protein j***y? When we eat protein, our body breaks it down into small pieces called ‘amino acids’. These are the building blocks of life! The body uses them to make protein for growth and repair, as well as many other functions. Our bodies produce some of these amino acids (known as ‘non-essential amino acids’), but not all of them. We must get these ‘essential’ amino acids from the food we eat.

Keep eating that protein people!

Osteochondritis Dissecans or OCD is a joint condition that mainly affects children and adolescents. Many of the bones in our body are covered at the ends by smooth cartilage. Sometimes cracks in the cartilage and underlying bone cause fragments of cartilage to flap around or break off inside the joint. This can lead to inflammation, pain and locking when the joint is used.

If your child has these symptoms, book an appointment here at Back Into Action Osteopathic Group and get checked today. What are some common pain spots that your child has complained about recently?

Why Does Cold Weather Make You Ache?

Ever notice your joints feel stiffer in winter? ❄️
Colder temps can reduce blood flow and make muscles tighten up — which leads to more aches, especially if you already deal with arthritis or old injuries. Osteopathy can help keep things moving smoothly all season long!

Static vs. Dynamic – What’s the Difference?

Not all stretching is created equal—and knowing when and how to stretch can make a big difference in your performance and recovery!

Static Stretching
Think: Hold and breathe.
This is when you stretch a muscle and hold the position for 15–60 seconds. Best used after exercise to help with recovery and flexibility.

Great for:
* Cooling down
* Improving long-term flexibility
*Relaxing tight muscles

🚫 Not ideal before high-intensity activity—it can actually reduce performance!

Dynamic Stretching
Think: Move through it.
These are controlled movements that gently take your joints and muscles through their full range of motion. Best used before exercise to warm up the body and activate muscles.

Great for:
* Pre-workout warm-up
* Enhancing performance
* Preparing muscles for movement

💡 Pro tip from Matt: Use dynamic stretching to get moving, and static stretching to cool down. Your body will thank you!

Patient: "I think I’m shrinking!"
Osteo: "Well, that’s what happens when you skip your stretches and sit like a pretzel all day!"
😄

Remember: good posture today saves you from becoming a question mark tomorrow ❓
So straighten up, breathe deep, and stretch like your spine depends on it — because it does!

Happy Friday from your friendly neighbourhood osteo — keeping you upright since 1991.
