What a joy it is to be able to practice Reiki together! It is a joy for me to host these monthly Gatherings and watch this community continue to grow with new and familiar faces joining each month. And I love how easily new participants slot into the fold and how welcomed they are by the others!

And here we are, the first Shihan-Kaku students of the Arjava Petter Institute!

After an incredible week with twenty other like-minded people, it was a gift to then gather in a smaller circle with Arjava, training for our first level of Teaching. It felt like a rare privilege to step into a quieter, more intimate space with Arjava as well as to be the first group of Shihan-Kaku’s since leaving the Jikiden Reiki Institute.

Sharing our days learning and having our lunches and dinners together as a group was truly a special experience!

As a person, Arjava seems to have lived a thousand lives…there is such a depth of not only life experience, but also his unique connection to Reiki and its roots. It is particularly his connection to Japan and the relationships he has with those closest to its origins that makes learning with him such a rich experience. He is humble, down to earth and he feels like an old friend. His influences are wrapped into his way of being, a mix of German, Japanese and Greek - quite a unique combination! - and he is one of the funniest people I have met!

There was a shared current of gratitude running through us all: gratitude for the chance to study so closely with Arjava, gratitude for each other, and gratitude for Reiki itself. There was laughter, tears and overall, a sense of joy that seemed to ripple through every one of us!

It was truly an unforgettable experience! I leave feeling deeply honoured to have had this experience and deeply grateful for this incredible practice. 🙏🏽🤍

Hands down, one of the most incredible experiences in my journey with Reiki yet!

Today I reflect on the first part of the training, Levels 1 & 2 with a group of people that began as strangers and are now lifelong friends! There were also some familiar faces from last year and reuniting was like reuniting with family. It is so hard to explain the connections that happen in these types of training but where Reiki is at the centre of what we are doing, it is, by nature, a heart opening and open-hearted space.

It was particularly an honour this year, to learn with Frank Arjava Petter, as Arjava, formerly the Principal of the Jikiden Reiki Institute, is now teaching independently, remaining true to the teachings as taught to him by Chiyoko Sensei and some additional traditional Reiki practices. It is exciting to be part of his evolving journey and share this with him.

Arjava is authentic, kind and compassionate in the way that he teaches and he brought so much light, joy and humour into the experience that made this first part of the training such an incredibly experience! More than a leader and teacher, his is also a friend and we will all cherish our continued journey with him.

I had high expectations (given how much I loved last year with him) but this exceeded it beyond my wildest dreams! An absolutely extraordinary experience!

Here we go again!

This is round two of teaching intensive with Arjava and my first Teacher’s level in this beautiful system of Reiki which stays true to the traditional practices taught to Chiyoko Yamaguchi by her teacher, Hayashi Sensei, the last Shihan student of Mikao Usui.

Reiki in the West has changed and adapted the practice in many ways. Many practices and traditional healing techniques are no longer known or taught and new additions and adaptations have occurred over time. Some students are drawn to these changes, whereas for me, I have always felt a strong pull towards the wisdom of the original practice, and the incredible power in its simplicity. This is just what resonates most for me.

On a personal front, this year has pushed me beyond my perceived limits and tested my inner strength and resolve. It’s be a tough one. But I have been so proud of myself and been able to see the real impact of all my healing and spiritual work. At the same time, when I get on the plane, I will breath a sigh of relief, it is time for me to exhale and use this time just for myself…this is a much needed break!

I choose healing and freedom from trauma cycles any day. It’s not easy work, it can come with grief, loss, a lot of unknowns and at times, isolation…but it is worth it. More and more I see people committed to their healing and committed to paving a better way forward with support from communities of people all on the same path and then becoming healers themselves and supporting others. Hurt people heal people too. it’s a choice. 🙏🏽🤍

In my life I’ve seen people carry the title of Guru or Healer and use it to hide behind…sometimes causing great harm to those who are most vulnerable.

And I’ve seen others with no title at all, no association with any healing practice, just everyday people who bring deep healing through something far more powerful: their humanity. It’s the willingness to meet others with authentic kindness, compassion and presence that heals.

These qualities are part of the human condition. They’re what remind us that we can ease the suffering of those around us simply by how we choose to show up.

Often that begins with our own healing. The more we face ourselves with honesty and compassion and the more willing we are to heal the shadow parts of ourselves, the more capacity we have to bring authentic love, compassion and kindness into the world. This is what Carl Jung spoke about when he said these words.

In Reiki, we meditate twice daily on various founding principals for a happy and healthy life. One of them relates to fulfilling our duty to continue to improve and heal ourselves so that we can improve and heal the world around us. Not by ‘doing’ anything necessarily, but just by being…

Being a healer is not a title. It’s how we live and show up. 🙏🏽🤍
