Flower therapy 4/25

No matter how hard life gets, we have to remember, there is joy in the simplicity of life itself all around us, we just have to seek it out.

Especially on the hardest days. 🙏

Six years of rucking every day with the original KidRucker! 😃

On 11 November 2019, I’d had enough. I told no one in particular that I was done — over rucking every day. That was going to be my last one because, honestly, I was throwing a little adult tantrum. 😢

Then six-year-old Lincoln stood in front of me, tears in his eyes, and said I couldn’t end my streak. It was too important. He said he’d do it with me that day so I wouldn’t stop.

So we rucked to school with his backpack full of lunch, water, and more lunch — and he’s been rucking with me ever since.

Funny how kids just know what matters.

Over the last six years, I’ve learned so much from seeing the world through his eyes. Those 30 minutes we share each day belong to us — no phones, no distractions — just walking, talking, and thinking.

We talk about everything. And when he asks a question about something he’s seen or felt, I’ve made it a rule not to just tell him what I think. Instead, we explore all the sides together so he can work out what he believes.

One morning, he asked about something his teacher had said — and I disagreed. Rather than say she was wrong, I tried to set my bias aside and help him see a few different points of view. I don’t even remember the topic, but that moment set the tone for every ruck since. 😃

It’s been challenging to rethink how I think — but also freeing. Seeing the world through the eyes of a little person reminds me that life isn’t all that complicated.

It’s mostly in our heads. 😉

So here’s to six years of rucking with the original KidRucker — hairy conversations, deep chats, and all! 🙏😃

Flower therapy 3/25

One of the best things about rucking every day is seeing things like this! Flowers with native bees inside them, fossicking for nectar.
The close up view, the sound, the smell. You don’t get that in front of a screen. 😃

Get outside and look around. It’s one of the best things you’ll ever do for your health.

Big day on the rucking range today as we walked (virtually) onto the Santa Monica Pier so Lincoln could complete the Conquerer Route 66 Challenge. It sure was a long time coming as he started this on 15 August 2021! He has used his daily rucking miles every day to slowly but surely get the miles done. Now I’m wondering what he’s going to take on next time!! 😳😃 Rucking streak day 2,170/70k for Lincoln and 2,273/40k for me.

Flower therapy 2/25

These roses are from my own front garden, and one of the reasons I love getting my hands dirty in the soil whenever I can is because gardening equals life.

People who garden not only live longer, they seem to live for longer with less physical and mental ailments.

Gardening has a lot of benefits for humans. Here are a few:

On the physical side it helps to keep your body strong and supple, and you get some vitamin D from the sunshine.

On the mental side you will experience a sense of achievement from growing plants, and maybe vegetables, and may help keep your brain active and alert for longer.

Spiritually you may experience a sense of connectedness to the earth, and purpose.

So get gardening.

So last Thursday Lincoln was doing some tennis drills, and as he shuffled backwards in one drill he stumbled a little, telling me afterwards he thought he’d heard a cracking sound.

He kept training though, without any further complaints, then backed up again on Friday for some serving practice.

We did our rucking as usual on Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday and Sunday we did some longer rucks, just like we do every week.

Sunday night he said, “Dad, my left foot is still sore from Thursday.”

Being all tech savvy like I am I took some photos and asked ChatGPT, as one does these days.

“Get him to ER immediately!” was ChatGPT’s response.

5th metatarsal avulsion fracture was the diagnosis. 😳🤦🏽

Parent of the year award to me, thank you. 😞

Anyway, he has to wear a boot to keep his foot immobile for a few weeks but he can keep walking as long as it’s not too painful, so the daily rucking mile is currently very slow, and very light.

But…..everyday means every day. 🤷🏽🙏

Flower therapy 1/25

Check out my echium flowers.

It’s the first month of spring here in Australia, and my echium’s have been ‘almost’ flowering for days.

This morning, Lincoln and I finished our morning ruck, and we came out to our back garden four our daily rucking selfie, and this is what we found. 🙏😊

It made me think, ‘How good is it to be alive!’

I get to walk everyday with my boy, I get to take a photo in front of some cool flowers, feel the sunshine on my face, and air in my lungs.

Yes, it’s true some days can be more challenging than others, but it’s also true that suffering can make us appreciate the good times even more.

So be grateful for the bad days, because they will make your good days truly great.😊

Flower therapy 2025 Part 1: take a leaf from the dandelion.

The dandelion is one of my favourite weeds. Not because it’s perfectly formed, although it is… Rather, I love that no matter how many times the council lawnmower men mow it down, the dandelion always grows back and sits there proudly….until it gets cut down again. It doesn’t give up, ever.

We should all take note of the dandelion and remember its strength next time we get cut down in life. Don’t give up, get back up. Keep rucking. Keep moving forward. It’s the ONLY way to live.

🙏😊

A story about Tom Holland (Spider-Man) doing a CrossFit workout called ‘Cindy’, came across my newsfeed a few weeks ago.

The workout involves doing as many rounds as possible (AMRAP) of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 air squats.

Spider-Man can apparently do 27 rounds on his best day. What a machine! 😳😃

Me being me, I thought it a sound idea to give it a crack a couple weeks ago and I knocked out 13 rounds. 🫤

Afterwards I looked up a YouTube video on how to do it and discovered I didn’t need to do strict pull-ups - cross fitters use something called kipping when they do pull-ups.

For those who have no idea what that is, it’s kind like the pull up version of doing a hill climb on an e-bike instead of a regular bike, ie, they’re easier. 😂

I gave it another go last week and managed 15 rounds. 🫤 I’ve never been particularly good at pacing, in anything I do, so I gassed myself early again. 🤦🏽

My partner gave me one of those knowing sideways glances when I explained to her that my pacing was off, and I went too hard, too soon. 🤷🏽🤔😉

After doing my rucking miles today I thought it a brilliant idea to give Cindy a third go. 🤷🏽🙄

It was ugly and it hurt, and I’m convinced it should be renamed “Wednesday Adams”, but I was quite pleased with my 19 rounds plus 4 reps. 😃 😩

Take away’s for me: 19 rounds might be close to 27, but my 48yo body still doesn’t look anything like Tom Holland’s. 💪🏾 😂

Take away’s for my partner: I need to moisturise and exfoliate more, and stop drinking so much Coke. 😳😂

Currently 7.05km ahead of mileage target for the year (6.5km/day)

Rucking streak day 2,094/70k for Lincoln and 2,197/40k for me.

Earned it today.

Managed an4km mall ruck dodging all the wanderers who just can’t walk straight, then finished off with a 2.5km ruck with a set of 5 ruck swings/10 ruck push-ups/15 ruck squats every 250m. Buy out was a 30 second ruck plank and 50 crunches.

Special guest was Cam, the KidRucker’s tennis buddy, for his first taste of rucking.

I’m happy to report that after 3 days I’m 4.15km ahead of target. 😃

Rucking streak day 2,092/70k for Lincoln and 2,195/40k for me.

So the euphoria of making it to six years of rucking every day has worn off, and the reality of my latest spur-of-the-moment challenge has set in:

Ruck 6.5km (4 miles) a day, for a 365 days to take my average yearly mileage to 1,000 miles/year. 😳🤦🏽

I’m happy to report that after 2 days I’m 4.14km ahead of target. 😃

Rucking streak day 2,091/70k for Lincoln and 2,194/40k for me.

Our Story

TimeLimit began as a motivational exercise challenge to help people to keep training and improving through the dark winter months, and days when you just don’t feel like training. It consisted of running or cycling as far as you could in a set time, a virtual race against other athletes.

It was a lot of fun, but through a series of serendipitous moments involving health and wellbeing issues for both of us, and our families, TimeLimit came to mean something more to us than just physical exercise.

We thought a lot about what we wanted TimeLimit to represent, and we realised that our journey, our purpose, was to bring people together, not to just exercise, but to connect. To TALK to each other. To SUPPORT each other through life and it’s challenges - mental health, family, relationships, health, nutrition, motivation, and being the happiest person you can be.

Everyone is an individual, but we don’t exist in solitude, and we can’t be the best version of ourselves on our own. TimeLimit is about sharing your journey with others, sharing your knowledge about life, and listening to how other people are feeling.
