My good friend Courtney (sound artist and healer) and I are running a breath, meditation, sound evening under the stars on the winter solstice on my property followed by a light feast by the fire. We will rug up and lay down and go deep.

Do what lights you up. Despite being lucky to love doing what I do for “work” I still “need” to carve out time to create and to do what beings me joy. For me this is writing songs, poetry, surfing, studying and reading. For you it may be gardening, hiking, whatever. Life’s too short to not enjoy the ride. My guiding question these days is super simple. Am I being the best version of myself? One is the as***le version, the cynic, the judgemental and closed minded - in other words the stressed version - the other far more positive and so to is the experience of life. Not striving for perfection, just to be a better human. Imagine a world where we all were happier, open, accepting and loving.

That can only ever start inside ourselves, and after tens of thousands of years of us fighting and dividing, think it’s way past time to drop our guards and let a little more love in…

The top regret of people dying is: “Not having the courage to live a life true to themselves, but rather living up to others' expectations.”

I feel it’s our deepest responsibility to ourselves and those we love to continually move in the direction of that which lights us up, our highest evolution! Being the best version of ourselves is a gift to ourself and others and the world. And we are the only ones that can trigger this evolution.

In times of stress, our inner 'as***le' easily surfaces. Why? Stress leads to a loss of access to our prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for rational thinking and impulse control. Instead, we resort to our primal limbic brain, where impulsive reactions take over. That's where meditation comes in—it helps us alleviate stress, keep our inner 'as***le' in check, and respond more thoughtfully.

As we welcome another beautiful year, I'm choosing a gentle shift in my journey. This year, it's not about rigid resolutions written in stone (plus the statistics on these is not great…). It's about evolving – growing, adapting, and flowing with life's rhythm.

Evolutions are about small, meaningful changes that accumulate over time. They are the whispers of our hearts, guiding us towards a more authentic version of ourselves.

Let's focus on evolving with kindness and patience. Let's celebrate every step of our growth, no matter how small. Remember, it's not about the grand gestures; it's the subtle shifts that truly transform us.

And too in evolving more likely to achieve greater external rewards.

Me when thinking of my contributions to social media this year...

As I ponder over my contributions to social media this year, I realize it's been an unusual journey in my profession as a meditation teacher. I found myself stepping back from the urge to self-promote—a crucial element in today’s world, yet somehow not resonating with me this year.

The introverted rebel in me felt overwhelmed by the constant need for 'show and tell' in our digital age. There were moments when I felt like that kid in class who says, 'Ah, I’ve got nothing this week.'

Reflecting on this, I believe I needed to experience this phase. After five years of full-time teaching, it felt like my version of a midlife crisis, a hump in the road. Instead of opting for a sports car, I chose my guitar, found solace on a hill, and sang the blues (not really but fits the narrative).

As the year draws to a close, it's time to sign off. I send you all my love and best wishes for the festive season. Looking forward to next year, I'm excited to share more about the wonders of meditation, the science behind it, and the journey to well-being. See you in the new year!

Marketer: let’s get images of you meditating like cross legged. People love that.
Me: no.
I’m often asked why I don’t you have a photo on my website or social media meditating cross legged? You know the ones.
And here’s why. after 17 years of meditation I still meditate in a comfy chair. Sure I’ve had phases where I’d meditate trying to be like a monk. But now I’m more interested in giving my nervous system deep rest then looking like a monk. And the technique I teach which has so much science to show countless benefits has us sitting comfortably.
Sidenote; I’ve got nothing against sitting cross legged and sure there may be some benefits and I occasionally do sit like that when I don’t have my chair. But the more ideas we can strip away from these concepts of what meditation has to be, the more we are likely to do it.

Meditation is more than just a stress-reliever; it enhances all aspects of health/life.

A peer-reviewed study conducted over 5 years compared the health of about 2000 regular Transcendental Meditation (the same technique as Vedic Meditation) practitioners against a benchmark group of 600,000 people. The results? The meditation group had:

🔹 50.1% fewer hospital inpatient days for young adults (19–39)
🔹 A whopping 69.4% fewer for older adults (40+)
🔹 54.7% fewer outpatient visits for young adults (19–39) 🔹 73.7% fewer visits for older adults (40+)
🔹 Major health category benefits: 55.4% fewer tumor-related admissions, 87.3% fewer heart disease admissions, and so much more.

The science is clear. Meditation is not just a tool for inner peace, but a means to a healthier life. 🌱🌍

Could it be this simple?
And a potential shift for the 🌎 Have more people living in the coherence of calmness, compassion and creativity rather than the stressed crazy self-interested version of ourselves. The chemicals in our bodies have a huge influence on our experiences and can come down to are we living in fight/flight/freeze or stay and play nervous systems.

A incredibly simple concept yet powerful and not necessarily easy to achieve, so as Gandhi best said “be the change you wish to see in the world”, and to start that gain greater regulation of your nervous system with meditation (proven via the lens of science to make such a change).

Evolution is a much more fluid process which exists throughout the universe. If you deep down feel there’s something wanting growth or a shift, honour that and work out what steps are required to facilitate your natural evolution.

Meditation is such a powerful tool to nurture the deeper connections to the reservoir within. Your nature knows what it wants. The mind is distracted by constant shiny things and old patterns but beneath, your “nature” is ever present and wanting to flourish.

Feedback from a new meditator! Always love hearing feedback like that, mediation is such a game changer.
Occasionally i forget or normalise the power of meditation. The body, the mind and the spirit love nothing more than bathing in it.
One of the greatest things I get to do is share this with others and watch as they delve past the misconceptions around how to meditate and experience it straight away.

I can relate to this recent comment from a student. It’s so Crazy how the body just lives 24/7 in fight or flight and we normalised it. Just the constant hum of feeling a sense of dis-ease, a constant state of vigilance. It’s tiring and not what we should be living in all the tine (a little stress is good just not constantly). If that’s you, there’s so many wonderful tools to help our nervous system access the parasympathetic system (stay and play) and meditation is a wonderful one to have in the tool box.

Like rubbing aloe Vera on sun burn doesn’t remove the burn it just soothes the skin and helps activate and facilitate repair, meditation doesn’t remove the stressors and suffering in life, it just aids us to help our nervous system repair and heal from the damage that such stressors have on us and potentially aid us to become less sensitive to the stress triggers.

Do you need some time for yourself? June 8-11 Byron bay. Take Some time to disconnect from the craziness of life, Some time to upgrade ourselves to the next evolution…
I’d like to extend an invitation to the retreat in Jun 8-11 in Byron Bay to come to the upcoming Rounding & Himalayan Breathwork retreat (only a couple spots left), to be immersed in nature, learn Vedic Rounding, Himalayan Breathwork immerse in the power of cold exposure, discover the power of sound and its many benefits, get a massage, soak in the saunas all while being nurtured by amazing food in a stunning location (it's pretty next level).
