The New Food Pyramid — And Why It Matters
Today the conversation around food has officially shifted.
The new U.S. food pyramid, released in January 2026 as part of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, looks nothing like the one many of us grew up with.
And honestly? ... it’s about time. 🥳
👉If you remember the old pyramid, you’ll remember this message loud and clear:
- Bread, pasta, rice and cereal at the base. [6-11 serves a day].
- Fats pushed to the top and demonised
🔬And for years, we have been told to follow this advice carefully because the science says so.
👁️👁️and watched as obesity, cardiovascular health and metabolic dysfunction became the largest health issues in our country.
😓We felt confused about why our energy dropped,
😓We felt desperate as our weight continued to climb
😓We felt dismissed as we became more inflamed and full of body pain
😓We've been put on medications to 'control' blood sugar wobbles and hormonal imbalances ... that have been driven by our food industry.
😓And gas lighted by our health system ... that told us, that what we ate made little difference to our illness epidemics.
So, what has Changed in the New Pyramid
IT HAS BEEN FLIPPED ON ITS HEAD 🙃🙃🙃
Instead of grains at the foundation,
the base is now PROTEIN and whole foods — things like meat, eggs, fish, legumes and real dairy.
HEALHTY FATS are no longer demonised and treated as something to fear.
ULTRA-PROCESSD FOODS and added SUGARS are clearly pushed to the bottom on the list where they belong.
IN SIMPLE TERMS, THE NEW FOOD PYRAMID SAYS ...
🍏Eat real food
🥩Prioritise protein
🧈Don’t fear natural fats
🌾Reduce refined grains and sugar
HELLO ...
but this is what Naturopaths and Nutritionist have been saying for many many years ... but told we were Quacks!!!!
This is a massive switch from both the 1990s 'pyramid model' [put together to support 'super-markets' and factory made products that they call food but are not really food].
and the more recent 'MyPlate model'
Old vs New —
Side by Side, Without the Noise
👉Old pyramid (1990s–2000s):
* Grains as the foundation
* Low-fat or fat-free everything
* Calories mattered more than quality
* Processed foods barely mentioned
👉New pyramid (2026):
* Protein and whole foods as the base
* Healthy fats supported, including full-fat dairy
* Strong limits on added sugar and ultra-processed foods
* Focus on nutrient density, not just calories
This shift came from recognising something important:
high-carbohydrate, low-fat eating patterns didn’t improve metabolic health AT ALL!!!!!!.
In many cases, they made things worse.
It made us sick and fat.
But Here’s the part that I Always Slow Down On...🐌
Even with all this progress, a pyramid is still a general guideline.
And your body is not 'general'.
Your body is YOU and YOU are personalised.
Some of us do brilliantly with fewer grains.
Others need small amounts them for gut health, fibre, hormones or training.
Some of us thrive on more dairy.
Others don’t tolerate it well at all.
This is where blanket advice — even improved blanket advice — still falls short.
