How Oranges May Brighten Your Mood: The Gut Connection to Depression

A large study found that eating citrus fruits—like oranges and grapefruits—may lower the risk of depression. Researchers followed over 32,000 women for more than a decade and found that those who consumed the most citrus had a 22% lower chance of developing depression. This effect seems to be linked to a specific gut bacterium, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, which increased with citrus intake and was found in lower amounts in people with depression. This microbe helps produce a compound (SAM) that may protect mood by supporting brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. The study suggests that the gut microbiome plays a key role in how food affects mental health and that citrus may help support beneficial gut bacteria involved in mood regulation. These findings open new possibilities for preventing depression through diet and gut health.
