In his 2025 Christmas message, Bishop Peter highlights the importance of light and community following the tragedy that occurred at Bondi.

“Just over a week ago, that beautiful beach became the scene of terrible violence. Since then, many of us have found that preparing for Christmas feels much harder,” he said.

“Violence is always about power. It seeks to create fear. It seeks to dominate. It places one person’s identity or worldview above the lives of others.

“This Christmas, may we resist fear. May we care for one another. And may we be bearers of hope and light to others.”

What are your memories of Christmas? 🎄

In our final Encounter for 2025, Bishop Peter recalls some of his earliest memories and shares the importance of carols in remembering the Christmas story.

He encourages us all to share our own Christmas memories – the good and the challenging ones – while offering the gift of love and kindness to people we meet.

This edition of Encounter also highlights Samaritans ongoing work in supporting those who are doing it tough this Christmas, as well as the historic restoration underway at Christ Church Cathedral.

There are also big plans in store at some of our parishes; our schools recap another year full of achievements; and we explore the benefits of Anglican Care’s HomeLife services.

Connie celebrates her century 🎉🎊🎈🎂

There was a special celebration at CA Brown as resident Connie celebrated her 100th birthday.

Connie had lots of family visit to celebrate the milestone. She also received letters from many special people all over the world, including King Charles.

Connie spends her time at CA Brown attending an exercise group twice a week and playing Bingo.

Happy birthday, Connie. We hope you had a great day!

Thank you and farewell, Fred and Bev 👏

A special farewell took place at Storm Village this week to thank two of our longest serving volunteers, Fred and Bev Wilks.

Fred has volunteered with Anglican Care for 22 years and Bev for 16 years. During that time, they became much-loved fixtures within the Storm Village community.

As the village bus drivers, Fred and Bev played a significant role in supporting residents to remain connected with the wider community.

Alongside our Lifestyle and Wellbeing teams, they assisted residents on and off the bus, provided social support, and helped make regular community outings possible.

Around 50 residents and staff attended the farewell on Wednesday, where Fred and Bev were thanked for their generous service.

They also reflected on their volunteering journey, sharing stories from their many years with us, including memorable bus trips and moments spent with residents.

The afternoon concluded with afternoon tea. It was a genuinely warm and meaningful celebration of their contribution ❤️

Jesmond Grove enjoyed a lovely visit from Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College (BTAC) representatives, including Chaplain Kate Heath, a teacher and their children, who attend the school.

They joined the weekly Anglican Church service and brought a lot of beautiful gifts, which BTAC students made for the residents.

Thank you, BTAC, for the wonderful gesture!

Our Story

In 1956, life moved at a gentler pace. People seemed to have more time for each other, their family and friends. However, the Anglican Church of Newcastle recognised that many older members of the community left to fend for themselves were in need of care and support.

In that moment, Anglican Care was born.

The first Anglican Care facility was established at Booragul and for anyone living on the western side of Lake Macquarie, the CA Brown Retirement Village became a prominent landmark on the long and winding road to Newcastle.

For many, it became a new home where they would live out their retirement years in peace, comfort and security. They were cared for by staff who, more likely than not, were locals themselves, adding to the shared sense of community.
