Earth Food & Herbal Health Earth Food & Herbal Health is to share knowledge about all things to do with natural healthcare including nutrition, herbal medicine and lifestyle tips.

I currently only do housecalls around Northern Rivers, NSW to the Southern Gold Coast, QLD Earth Food & Herbal Health is run by me, Eon Cockburn. For most of my life I have been around healthcare in one way or another, having a family background in medicine. I eventually became a medical scientist focusing on pathology and in particular medical parasitology. However, over the years, with a great interest in herbal medicine it seemed I was destined to jump the fence so to speak, and follow the path of a more natural type of healthcare - one that worked with the body and its natural processes. This page is for me to pass on some of the knowledge I have gained over the years in the fields of pathology, naturopathy, nutrition, herbal medicine and all things to do with natural healthcare. My aim is to assist people to help their bodies heal itself in a natural and harmonious way to gain an increased quality of life. I have completed and graduated from a Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathic medicine with electives in Swedish (relaxation) musculoskeletal therapy. I am fully qualified and registered through the NHAA (Naturopaths and Herbalists Association of Australia) and therefore recognised by most health insurance funds enabling you to claim on my consultations. I am in the process of producing and marketing some of my own herbal based health products which will be available through my website in the near future. I will announce when they are available on here to let you know. I am now taking on clients for naturopathic consultations and/or Swedish relaxation massage via housecalls only by appointment. Please just click the button to email and arrange an appointment with me. My focus of interest at present are broad but I eventually envisage concentrating a lot on men’s health in particular and Australian indigenous herbal medicine.I do however take on all clients and am confident that I can make a difference in your health, no matter what is going on for you. Please enjoy my page and contact me if you have any queries at all. Many thanks, Eon

When I was a Physical Therapy student I did an internship at a hospital in Houston that was world renowned for its treatment in heart disease.

On the very first floor of this hospital was a McDonald’s.

I remember seeing nurses, doctors and other health care professionals eating lunch there and thinking…

“Something is not right.”

On one occasion I treated a patient who asked me to take him down for a Big Mac shortly after he had heart surgery.

This felt icky to me. I became confused.

At that time… I knew very little about nutrition but I could definitely sense that fast food was not healthy food.

Why would this type of food be allowed in a hospital where the focus should be on health?

My skepticism of the conventional healthcare model grew when I began treating patients in outpatient Physical Therapy…

I’d work with people who we’re dealing with musculoskeletal issues such as herniated disks, sciatica, neck pain, shoulder pain and so on…

As I’d take their history I’d always ask them how their pain started and what they first did about it. 9 times of 10 their answer was…

“Oh… I took pain meds.”

This was frustrating to me and I began seeing that we had a health care system that was more interested in treating symptoms rather getting to the root issue.

My education as a Doctor of Physical Therapy taught me that most of physical pains people experience are a result of musculoskeletal imbalances and poor movement patterns.

If I educated patients about this, taught them the right exercises and restored proper movement there was no need for them to numb their pain with medications.

It also saved them from having a costly surgery down the road… which I was seeing didn’t always have positive outcomes.

Later in my career I began doing Home Health Physical Therapy and worked with people who we’re not functionally independent to the point where they could drive to a clinic on their own.

I treated many people with cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and morbid obesity.

As I’d walk in their homes I’d carefully observe the environment and began making connections…

I noticed the way the home smelled, the foods in the pantry, what was being watched on TV and the messages that we’re being sent.

I began seeing my patients as people who had been brainwashed into eating toxic foods and taking pills to treat symptoms.

My breaking point came when I treated an obese child with diabetes.

When I walked in her home I saw a mother and father who both sat in electrical wheel chairs worth over $20k.

Her brother was also obese and had little energy.

I looked over at the kitchen counter and saw nothing but fruit loops and a thick row of mediations for both the children and parents.

I then watched an obese nurse come in and give each family member an injection.

I became sad.

At that point I knew that I could no longer work in this system. I felt incredibly out of alignment and knew that something had to change.

Ever since then I’ve made it my life’s mission to help people restore their natural health through better ways of eating, moving, thinking and being in this world.

The truth is that we have a healthcare system that knows nothing about food and a food industry that knows nothing about health.

Many of our healthcare issues that we’re challenged with have much more to do with our environment that they do genetics.

We’ve been treating symptoms rather than going after the root cause. It hasn’t been so much about “healthcare” as it is about “sick care.”

It’s as if we’ve been busy trying to mop up the floor without having the awareness that what we most need to do is turn off the kitchen sink.

This is why we're in a health crisis.

The time to take responsibility for your health and ultimately your life is NOW.

No one can do this for you.

Do not get tricked into identifying yourself as a diagnosis given to you by a healthcare system that has radically missed the mark.

You are NOT your diagnosis.

You’re a human being who needs…
REAL whole foods
Lot of water
Consistent movement
Plenty of rest
Time to breathe
Sunshine
Play
… and Community

These are the least things that will make the most difference.

That’s what true health care needs to look like.

I’ll leave it with this…

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.”

-Thomas Edison

The skinny on low carb diets and diabetes.
Make an appointment with a naturopath or nutritionist if you have questions or need help with your condition.

Today (August 21, 2018) Diabetes Australia released a "position statement" to make some loose recommendations or advice to people with diabetes using a "low carb" eating plan to better improve their health.

I have gone over their position statement and this is my review...

Firstly, what is Diabetes?! Diabetes is caused by your food intake being too high in refined and processed carbohydrates, which causes high blood sugar levels. Over time, your cells start ignoring the insulin signal so your blood sugar levels remain high. More and more insulin is produced, as your body is now "insulin resistant", until your poor pancreas organ effectively wears out, and now you have diabetes (type 2). All caused by a high carbohydrate diet. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition affecting insulin production, so blood sugar levels are high and cause similar damage to health.

So a lower carb eating plan would seem to be the obvious solution! Many independent and evidence-based Nutritionists and Naturopaths (like me!) have been saying this for many years! Low carb for diabetes has been researched and recommended since the 1920s, but not by the diabetes organisations.

Some notes of the "position statement" are:
1) Diabetes Australia say that there is no "one size fits all" approach to "living well with diabetes". Absolutely true! So why have they been using a "one size fits all approach" for decades?! Eat less fat, less salt, follow the good guidelines, and take this insulin and medication. This doesn't fix diabetes, but only makes it worse.

2) There are many reminders that someone with diabetes should speak with their dietitian BEFORE considering going low carb. Why work with someone who hasn't actually fixed the problem in how long?

3) Dietitians are not allowed to recommend a low carb diet for any condition, as it's against their rules. The reason why is explained later... So if you have diabetes and want to try low carb, you speak to your dietitian, who will just say - "you shouldn't do that" and "eat more grains", which are high in carbs, which causes high blood sugar, which causes more insulin resistance. Pass those diabetes meds please.

4) They are still suggesting that healthy fats should be avoided because of their risk to heart disease - an issue which hasn't been proven in thousands of published studies in decades...

5) People starting a low carb diet will experience tiredness, headaches, nausea and dizziness. Really?! Not in my experience in a low carb plan - in fact, the chronic headaches and migraines disappear within days of starting low carb, and nausea and dizziness reduces too, as does your weight, blood sugar level, cholesterol level, symptoms, and many other "side effects"!

6) They claim low carb diets are popular because they are easy to follow and are heavily promoted in the media! NO! Because there is a lot of very good research showing that they work amazingly well for people with diabetes, weight issues, heart disease, cancer, and many other chronic health conditions!

7) They do say that there is "reliable evidence" (hooray!) that "lower carb" eating can be "safe and useful in lowering blood glucose levels"... Great! Then they add "in the short term (up to 6 months)" but only because they didn't include any studies in their position statement which went longer than this.
8) They didn't consider "vegetables " as being "carbs", when they are. But a "low carb" plan doesn't mean eating less or no veg! Low carb means low refined carbs like sugar, grains, grain products and alcohol, as all of which greatly raise blood sugars and insulin response.

9) They included 3, yep, just 3 pathetic studies to show that low carb wasn't proven to be of benefit in type 1 diabetes, and the most number of people tested in the 3 tests was 45 people. Another 3 studies used for type 2 diabetes. Hardly good examples, when I can find more and better quality studies showing much better benefits for diabetes.

10) AND their definition of "low carb " is diets with no more than 130gm of carbs per day. That's NOT a low carb diet! That's a MODERATE to high carb diet! We don't consider a diet to be low carb unless it's less than 30-50gm of carbs per day. No wonder they didn't get the really good results of reduced blood glucose and HbA1c (a diabetes blood sugar marker test) than I've seen in practice!

In summary, at best, Diabetes Australia are saying, you MAY be able to do a "moderate carb" diet (because it sure isn't low carb!) for up to 6 months maximum, only if you aren't pregnant, a child, breastfeeding, those who are malnourished (including those with cancer, infections, heart disease, and osteoporosis), with liver or kidney failure, eating disorders, on diabetes medications, or if you are a dietitian or diabetes consultant!

ALL of these conditions are ideal for a low-carb and highly nutritious eating plan! All of these health conditions will greatly improve from eating less sugar, grains and starchy foods.

Despite the position statement and its attempt at trying to stop the public criticism against their outdated advice for diabetics, the Diabetes Australia website still has the same old poor advice. The same with the Dietitians Association of Australia. "People with diabetes should follow the Australian Dietary Guidelines", whose high-carb advice caused the diabetes in the first place, because the guidelines were written by the Dietitians Association of Australia, who in turn are sponsored by many food industry groups, and processed food maufacturers like Campbells, Arnotts, Nestle, the Australian Breakfast Cereal Manufacturers Forum (ABCMF), and more! It says so on their website!

Now do you see why we have this epidemic of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases? Nothing is going to really change until the DAA is either replaced, or they start giving factual nutrition advice based on real science, and not on corporate "sponsorships".

Diabetes (type 2) CAN easily be treated, symptoms reduced, and health regained very quickly with a low carb nutrition plan and some other treatments. Type 1 diabetes can be much easier to manage, insulin doses reduced, chronic symptoms reduced, and long-term complications reduced. Type 3 diabetes (Alzheimer's Disease) can be greatly improved too. I have experience in getting these results with diabetics, and I would like to help others too!

How is your bread consumption? It is my personal weakness that I struggle with myself. I find it is so addictive.....all bread products.
Does anyone here use any alternatives to standard bread products? Please post and let's get a discussion going.

It's back to school week. Be aware of how much sugar you are feeding your child.

We're unsure of the origin of this image but it perfectly highlights the many toxic ingredients in everyday products.

Is it safe to eat or consume? If not, don't put it on your skin!

These chemicals build up in our bodies and create cumulative negative health effects over time. We live in the age where eating clean and exercise are not enough to keep us above the wellness line. Look at your environment including household cleaning products!

Once again mainstream media catches up with what should've been common knowledge years ago. Nice how they pretty much ignored the main reason these products are harmful.....the abundant use of carcinogens, hormone disruptors and other nasty chemicals in many products.
What sort of personal care products are you using?

If you are unwell don't consult Dr Google and self-prescribe. Make an appointment to see a professional degree educated naturopath or other health provider.
