What is bilateral (double-handed) drawing?
This is one of my clients’ double handed drawings. She is 14 years old and has a mild brain injury and low vision in her right eye. What do you see?
From this drawing, can you tell...
• Which is her dominate hand?
• Which is her leading hand? (This can be different to the dominate hand).
• Where do you think her eyes were primarily focused during the drawing?
• Which side of her brain was she using during the drawing?
• Do you believe this was an easy or difficult drawing to do?
Bilateral drawing, or 'Double Doodle Play' is one of the 26 basic Brain Gym activities. This fun and effective activity helps to improve eye-teaming, fine motor skills, and whole-brain development.
As the hands lead the eyes to the various fields of vision, they map out coordinated patterns of movement.
This eye activation develops and strengthens neural connections and lays a strong foundation for other two-handed daily living activities such as cooking and gardening.
Bilateral drawing also enhances academic outcomes in reading, writing, and mathematics, improves spatial awareness and facilitates right/left discrimination.
Would you like to learn the skills to offer this fun and highly effective activity to your own clients and network?
