Ever wondered why some babies enter the world wearing a beauitful white coat?

That coat is vernix caseosa (aka 'vernix') - a creamy film consisting of almost 80% water that covers the skin of the fetus during the last trimester of pregnancy.

It is a naturally occurring coating that has numerous functions before, during and after birth, including protecting your new baby's skin and helping them adapt life outside the womb.

What are the benefits?

• Protecting the skin from excessive water exposure during development
• Lubrication of the birth canal
• Temperature regulation
• Innate immunity
• Providing defence against bacterial infections
• Antioxidant, moisturising and wound healing properties
• Aiding in good gut health

Should I wash it off?

It was once common practice to wash babies as soon as they were born, but today we usually delay baby's first bath by at least six hours, up to a week.

So if your baby arrives looking like this, we recommend gently rubbing that natural 'body butter' into their fresh newborn skin!

Meet Kerry. Having worked the full-scope of midwifery in the UK, including home births, Kerry came to Gold Coast Private last year as our Midwifery Clinical Educator...and has loved every minute of it.

"Midwifery to me was never about catching babies. For me it's about being alongside a woman, building trust, offering education to empower her to make informed choices," she says.

At Gold Coast Private, Kerry loves being part of a multidisciplinary team where she says 'every voice matters'.

"We all recognise that we are supporting women through the most important time of their lives," says Kerry.

"I love that most families stay for four to five nights at Gold Coast Private, giving us the time to build relationships and support families to have a positive experience from the beginning, setting them up for success when they go home.

"Patient to staff ratios ensure we can take time to listen, educate and provide outstanding care for women and their families around the clock; while fair rostering and supportive management creates the perfect work-life balance for midwives.

"It's a win win for everyone."

Have you noticed some of our midwives wearing lipstick lately? Well, it's for an important cause.

Our wonderful midwife, Jackie Brun is working hard to shine a light on women's mental health. She says being in a maternity ward means she sees women in their happiest times, but also sometimes, during their most tragic and sad moments.

"Perinatal mental health is finally being recognised, and it's long overdue," says Jackie.

"I've personally known two young, beautiful women whose lives have recently been cut short by mental health issues they couldn't resolve. We need to talk about it. We need to help those suffering. We need to offer support and take action."

Liptember invites people to wear bright lipstick during September to show support, raise awareness and start conversations. If you'd like to find out more or donate visit - https://www.liptember.com.au/jackie-brun

“Some moments in this work take my breath away,” says our midwife Katie Atkins, who has been affectionately dubbed ‘Fairy Godwife’ by two best friends whose births she assisted in the same birth suite, just one week apart.

“In the stillness of the night, I arrived to find their strength shining. Both welcomed their beautiful daughters into the world through unforgettable waterbirths at Gold Coast Private - quick, powerful, and filled with love. Neither knew the s*x of their baby, so the moment they each lifted their girls into their arms will be forever etched in my heart.

“To now walk with them into their fourth trimesters is such a blessing. I feel as though I’ve been lovingly welcomed into their village and I hope to be a part of their girls’ lives forever, and maybe, just maybe, be known as ‘Aunty Katie’.

“These are the moments that remind me why I do what I do. My heart is so full. I truly have the best job in the world.”

You sure do Katie. We can vouch for that ❤

We asked the lady behind the lens, Monique from , how photographing pregnant, birthing and postpartum women differs from other assignments?

"It’s intimate. Sacred. Emotional. As a mum, I connect deeply with women in these stages — pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are such fleeting windows of life, and I feel honoured every time I get to document them. It’s not just about taking a beautiful photo — it’s about capturing the way a body holds love, strength, and transformation all at once," she replied.

Well said, Mon. Well said.
