Different generations often clash at work due to misunderstandings. A manager asked a younger employee about changing career paths, and the response was instant offense! The key? Open-ended questions avoid assumptions. Instead of policy-focused questions, ask about their reasoning and needs.

Leadership is evolving, and generational dynamics are at the heart of it.

Did you know that Millennials will make up 75% of the global workforce by 2025?

Yet many workplaces still operate with leadership models shaped by Baby Boomers and Gen X. This generational mismatch can sometimes cause friction, miscommunication, and missed opportunities.
According to Deloitte’s 2023 Gen Z and Millennial Survey, 49% of Gen Zs and 62% of Millennials say work is part of their identity but they demand purpose, flexibility, and mental health support.

Our masterclass, “Your Generation Is Driving Me Nuts,” explores how generational theory explains workplace behavior, why Millennials and Gen Z are redefining leadership and what Gen X and Boomers can do to adapt and thrive.

A sigh and pinched brow, eye-rolling: these subtle cues can signal disagreement or discomfort, impacting team members and hindering open communication. Build psychological safety and trust to foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable speaking up.

You can measure trust and safety rather than just sense them.

Use short, regular pulse checks and observe meeting behaviours.

Combine survey data with visible norms so you’re not guessing.
Quarterly reviews make the “soft stuff” tangible.

Simple pulse-check items (1–5 scale):
• I can question decisions without negative fallout
• Mistakes are discussed to learn, not to blame
• We address issues in the room, not in corridors
• Our meeting norms are clear and followed
• I know what behaviour is expected here

Practical meeting moves:
Replace “Any questions?” with “What needs clarifying?” — then pause for seven seconds.
Invite two rounds: Clarifying questions → Concerns/risks.
Model curiosity before advocacy.
And make “no side-glances, no eye-rolls” a stated rule.

If you measured trust and safety today, what would the data show?

SMI TRAINING The Stress Management Institute provides workplace training services and conducts accredited training for individuals who wish to become qualified Stress Management Practitioners and Facilitators. Join now to embark on an exciting full-time or part-time career caring for and supporting people who are struggling to cope with stress. It is a twelve month, ten unit program, either taken online at any time 24/7, or covered over four three-day long weekends, or a combination these. Also, participate in the two-day Stress to Strength Experience seminar. The training is highly practical and there are lots of ‘hands on’ aspects throughout the course. You will also fill the role of a practitioner during your training. You will start your one on one, face to face, and telephone practitioner consulting experience early on in your training. You will be working with real clients who need your help in stress relief, and learning the tools you need so that they can manage their stress far better, and enjoy a much healthier and balanced life. This training course is fully accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and is also supported by the Industries Skills Councils of Australia (ISCA). This qualification is offered in partnership with Amina Academy Pty Ltd, a registered training organisation (provider number 31532). Graduates will attain the 10420NAT Certificate IV in Stress Management Practitioner qualification on completion of the training program, and have also completed more than half of a Certificate IV in Business. Students may commence the Practitioner Training at any given module. Each module is stand-alone, which is why they are named Red, Green, Blue, and Purple, to indicate that there is no “number 1″ at which students must start. On completion of all four modules, the student will then be eligible to graduate from the program. Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/StressManageIns
