Osteo Catherine Spiteri answering FAQ - Can osteopathy help with jaw & TMJ issues?

Lots of people come in to see osteopaths about TMJ issues or jaw issues

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. So it is actually your jaw joint, coming in through there.

And when they come see us, we assess to see what the rest of the muscles of the face and mouth are doing. Including the neck, front and back, underneath the chin. We can even pop a glove on and see what the tissues are doing inside the mouth and jaw and under the tongue and see what's relating to the reason why you're coming in

Common Conditions Treated:

Jaw clenching and bruxism (teeth grinding).
Clicking or popping jaw joints.
Locking of the jaw.
Tension headaches stemming from the jaw.

If you or a family member are experiencing jaw pain, clenching or clicking of the jaw joint, make an osteo appointment today, book online at www.yourbodyosteopathy.com.au or 9431 6604

April is Osteopathy Awareness Month!

Osteopaths understand how the body works and use a whole body approach to care. They may help to ease musculoskeletal tension and pain, and improve mobility.

Using a range of hands-on techniques and exercise advice, osteopaths may develop individual care plans that address the musculoskeletal impacts of long-term health conditions or physical disability, supporting movement and day-to-day function.

This past weekend our Osteopath Marnie Norfolk attended a conference with over 200 osteopaths to share and learn. We were able to recognise our history and say thank you to our teachers and mentors. Many younger osteopaths attended and Marnie was able to connect with many as she has now been teaching osteopaths for 23 years. She caught up with some study buddies! And let’s not forget the gala dinner where all got to have fun and carve up the dance floor!

Sleep is one of the most important parts of recovery and healing.
If you’re waking with neck pain, headaches or stiffness, your pillow, mattress or sleep position could be contributing.

Osteopathic treatment + the right sleep setup = better rest and better recovery.

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month

A time to shine a light on a disease that affects 1 in 7 people assigned female at birth. By raising awareness, we can help drive early detection, better support, and greater understanding. 💛

Endometriosis can impact daily comfort, movement and quality of life.
While osteopathy doesn’t treat endometriosis itself, we can help support the body by addressing muscular tension, pelvic and lower back discomfort, and movement restrictions.

You don’t have to push through pain alone — support is available.

Stretch at Work — Your Body Will Thank You

Whether you work at a desk, on your feet, or outdoors, staying in one position too long can lead to stiffness, pain and injury.

Regular stretching helps improve flexibility, reduce muscle soreness and keep you moving well throughout the day.
Aim for slow, controlled stretches and hold each one for 10–20 seconds.

Try these simple workplace stretches:

✔ Neck Rotations – Gently turn your head side to side to reduce neck tension.
✔ Shoulder Stretch / Rotations – Link fingers and lift arms overhead to open shoulders and chest.
✔ Side Bends – Reach overhead and stretch through your side body.
✔ Wrist & Forearm Stretch – Great for computer and tool-based work.
✔ Back Extension – Hands on lower back, gently arch to counteract sitting.
✔ Heel Raises – Helps circulation and lower leg strength.

If you’re currently injured or receiving treatment, check with your health professional before starting new exercises.

Taking 2–3 minutes to stretch during your day can make a big difference to how your body feels.

Stress doesn’t just live in your mind — it impacts your heart too. Long-term stress can contribute to higher blood pressure, inflammation and lifestyle habits that increase heart disease risk.

Simple ways to support your heart:
✔ Prioritise quality sleep
✔ Move your body regularly
✔ Eat a balanced, plant-rich diet
✔ Take time to reset (breathing, walking, switching off)

Looking after your heart isn’t just about exercise — it’s about how you live, eat and manage stress day-to-day.

Your body and your heart work together. Look after both. ❤️
