Our modern lives can be truly amazing – we can do almost anything from a mobile phone, tablet, or computer...
BUT, have you considered the impact on your posture and spinal health from using your device? 96% of Aussies access the internet daily for an average of nearly 6 hours, which increases the chance that you or someone you know is at risk of developing ‘Tech Neck’.

Tech neck symptoms include headaches, neck, shoulder and upper back pain. Tech neck can also lead to postural problems and may cause problems further down the track – there’s a cumulative effect which can create changes to the natural curve of your neck and postural changes.
❗Here’s some tips to help you take control of your spinal health and tackle tech neck head-on:
📲Have a friend or family member take a photo of you from side on to check your posture – ideally your ears should line up with your shoulders. If your head is too far forward of your shoulders, it might be time to start thinking about making some changes.
📲Hold your phone up at eye level – it might look a bit strange but it will reduce the strain on your spine and your neck muscles.
📲Take regular movement breaks every 30 minutes to look away from your device, correct your posture and move your neck.
📲Limit the amount of time you’re on your device – the guidelines recommend 2 hours per day.
📲If you’re a parent, keep an eye on your child’s posture while they’re using a device – kid’s can get absorbed by what they’re doing and don’t really pay attention to their posture.

Ever heard of ‘Tech Neck’?
We love our devices but they can literally be a pain in the neck.
Constant looking down on your device without a break not only creates headaches, neck, shoulder and upper back pain, it can also cause problems further down the track... there’s a cumulative effect which can create changes to the natural curve of your neck and upper back, and your posture.
Here's a few tips to help with Tech Neck 📲💻
👉Hold your phone at eye level to reduce the strain on your neck
👉Make sure you have regular breaks from looking down - move your neck and stretch every 10 minutes if using mobile devices and every 30 minutes if using a computer
👉Use your tablet or laptop at a table instead of on the couch or in bed
👉Have a checkup with your chiropractor to help with your neck pain and understand the long term impacts of Tech Neck

What’s wrong with this picture? …besides his Zoom attire 😁
You guessed it – his chair!
If you work from home, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on an office chair but if you have a good quality chair that supports your body, you’re less likely to have back pain.
Here’s four tips on what to look for in an office chair:
✅height adjustable
✅lumbar support for your lower back
✅armrests
✅swivel

❗️Bonus tip: make sure you sit with your butt towards the back of the seat, not perched on the edge of your seat!

Is your child going back to school this week?
(I can hear a collective ‘yay’ from all the parents out there!)
If your child is wearing a backpack, here’s a few of quick tips to make sure their developing spine stays healthy:
🎒Always wear both shoulder straps
🎒Secure the chest and waist straps to evenly distribute weight.
🎒Adjust the straps for a snug fit against your child's back
🎒Make sure the backpack is positioned below the shoulders and above the hips

Need some more tips on looking after your child’s spine? Head to the clinic website to book an appointment or give Dr Sue a call on 0466447580.

Are you getting ready to start your child’s school year?
In the morning rush, small things like packing and wearing a school bag properly can easily be overlooked — but they can make a big difference for your child’s growing spine.
Here’s 5️⃣tips on packing your child’s backpack:
🎒Choose a bag with wide padded shoulder straps for better weight distribution
🎒Only pack as much as your child needs for the day
🎒Pack the heaviest items closest to the spine
🎒Zip up all compartments
🎒Encourage your child to always wear both shoulder straps

Pillows are a hot topic at the moment in the clinic.
We often don’t think about our pillows until we’re actually in bed, or if we’re waking up with a sore neck. Pillows aren’t ‘one size fits all’ and the type of pillow you need is as individual as you are, which can make it a bit tricky to find the right one…

Here's five pillow tips for you:
👉It's best to change your pillow every two years – like everything, they eventually wear out.
👉If your pillow starts to become a bit soft and squishy, or the filling is starting to break down, it’s time for a new pillow even if it’s less than two years old.
👉If you’re having to bunch up the pillow under your neck, it means that your pillow isn’t supporting the natural curve of your neck and it’s time for a new pillow.
👉Have someone check your head and neck position in relation to the rest of your spine, while your head is on the pillow. If your head and neck aren’t aligned with the rest of your spine it can create extra pressure on the joints and muscles in your neck and upper back
👉Often you get what you pay for so think about investing in a good quality pillow. We spend about a third of our lives asleep so it makes sense to have a good, supportive pillow.

I recommend Posture Form pillows (it's the one I use) – they’re Australian made and even have a 40 night trial

If you’d like some more tips on choosing the right pillow or looking after your neck or back, give the clinic a call on 0466447580, or head to the clinic website for more information and to book an appointment online.
