Melanoma Awareness – March

March is a time to raise awareness about melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. It develops in the skin’s pigment cells and can spread to other parts of the body if not detected early.

Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, and around 95% of cases are linked to UV exposure.

Simple steps can help reduce your risk:
• Seek shade during the hottest part of the day
• Wear sun-protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses
• Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen and reapply regularly
• Avoid sunburn and excessive sun exposure

Melanoma often appears as a new spot on the skin or a change in an existing mole, so it’s important to be familiar with your skin and notice any changes.

If you notice any new or changing spots, or would simply like a general skin check, we encourage you to see your doctor or visit our clinic for an assessment.

Please note that Australian Clinical Labs (ACL) located at Virginia Medical Centre will have updated operating hours effective from Saturday 14th March.

Operating Hours (from 14th March):
Monday – Friday: 7:30am – 3:00pm
Saturday: 7:30am – 12:00pm

Please note there is no change to the medical centre’s operating hours.

Patients attending for pathology services are reminded to bring their pathology request form with them, as medical centre staff will not be available to provide copies outside of the medical centre’s operating hours.

We are also pleased to share that ACL will now operate two collection rooms, six days a week from Saturday 14th March, helping improve access and reduce wait times for patients requiring pathology services.

Thank you.

Teal Ribbon Day – Ovarian Cancer Awareness 💙
25 February

Teal Ribbon Day, held on 25 February, is part of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, recognised throughout February. It is a time to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, honour those affected, and acknowledge the important work being done in research, education, and care.

Ovarian cancer is often referred to as a “silent disease” because its symptoms can be vague and easily overlooked. Increasing awareness of the signs and risk factors is critical to improving early detection and outcomes.

Throughout February, we stand with individuals and families impacted by ovarian cancer, remember those we have lost, and recognise the dedication of healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates working to create change.

If you notice persistent or unusual symptoms, have concerns about your health, or have a family history of ovarian cancer, we encourage you to speak with your doctor or visit our clinic for advice and assessment. Early conversations are important.

RedFeb – Heart Research Month ❤️

February is RedFeb – Heart Research Month, a time to raise awareness of heart health and the importance of life-saving research.

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death, affecting individuals and families across our community. Research plays a vital role in prevention, early detection, and improved treatment—helping more people live longer, healthier lives.

RedFeb is an opportunity to reflect on heart health, increase awareness of risk factors, and encourage conversations about prevention and early detection.

If you have concerns about your heart health, a family history of heart disease, or are due for a routine check-up, we encourage you to see your doctor or visit our clinic to discuss heart health screening and prevention.

Together, small steps can help protect heart health now and into the future.
