ADHD and food? It’s not always about willpower.

In this video, Dr Belinda Jennings, GP at Alevia, explains why food choices and eating patterns can be more complex for some people with ADHD.

For some, factors like reward, impulse control and self-regulation may play a role. That does not mean a lack of discipline.

That’s why care should look at the whole picture.

At Alevia, we take an individualised approach to weight management, with treatment tailored to each person’s clinical needs.

This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week — and we’re talking about something that doesn’t get nearly enough airtime.

If you have ADHD, challenges with eating patterns and weight management are not a character flaw, laziness, or a lack of willpower. ADHD-related neurobiology can play an important role in things like food choices, meal planning, and impulsive eating.

Understanding these patterns is often the first step toward finding support strategies that feel more practical and sustainable.

In this short video, I share four ways ADHD can affect eating behaviour. Over the coming weeks, our medical and dietitian team will explore each of these further, with practical, evidence-informed strategies designed around common ADHD-related challenges.

Because managing weight with ADHD is not just about trying harder. It’s about understanding what may be getting in the way and getting the right support.

There’s no perfect moment to start. But there is a thoughtful way forward.
If you’ve been putting your health on the back burner — for the kids, for work, for “when things settle down” — this is your reminder that your health matters too.

At Alevia, we take a medical, team-based approach to weight management. Our clinicians may include GPs, dietitians, exercise physiologists and psychologists, with care tailored to individual needs.
We recognise obesity as a complex chronic condition. That’s why our approach focuses on personalised assessment, evidence-informed care, and practical support — without judgement.
Progress, not perfection. Compassion, not judgement. Evidence-informed care, not fads.

What should patients on GLP-1 medications know before surgery? 🩺

As weight loss medications like GLP-1 therapies become more widely used, an important question is coming up more often before surgery: should these medications be paused beforehand?

At the moment, there is still limited evidence and varying recommendations about the safest approach. Some patients are advised to stop their medication for a period of time before surgery, while others may be able to continue — depending on individual circumstances and surgical planning.

That’s why research in this area is so important. Our colleagues at the University of Melbourne are currently running a study exploring the best fasting strategies and preparation for patients taking GLP-1 medications before surgery.

Their goal is to help develop clearer, evidence-based guidance so both patients and clinicians can feel more confident when preparing for surgery.

If you’re interested in contributing to research that may improve care for future patients, you can contact:

Every study like this brings us closer to safer, more personalised care for patients on weight loss medications. 💙

Struggling to stay consistent? You’re not alone — and that’s not a personal failing.

One of the most common things we hear is that motivation alone can be hard to sustain. Life gets busy, setbacks happen, and routines can slip. That’s completely normal, and it’s one of the reasons we value a team-based approach to weight management.

That’s where Olga comes in.

As one of our dedicated health coaches at Alevia, Olga works alongside our GPs and allied health team to provide ongoing, personalised support as part of your care.

Accountability isn’t about pressure or perfection. It’s about having someone in your corner to help you stay connected to your goals, work through challenges, and keep moving forward.

If you’ve found it hard to stay on track in the past, you’re not alone. For many people, the missing piece is the right support.

That’s exactly what we’re here for.

Happy International Women's Day to all women doing the impossible! ❤️

Today, more than ever, we need female leaders, medical practitioners and entrepreneurs.

In my video earlier this week, I talked about the journey that brought me here. Today I want to talk about the people who make Alevia what it is every single day.

These are the women of Alevia. Every doctor, every receptionist, every person who answers the phone, welcomes a patient through the door, and holds the clinic together behind the scenes. They are the reason our patients feel cared for from the moment they make contact with us.

Building a team like this has been one of the great privileges of my career. They are skilled, compassionate, and genuinely committed to the people they care for. I could not be more proud.

To every woman who has ever felt unseen, under-supported, or like the system was not built with you in mind: we built this one with you in mind.

And to everyone who comes to us for care, men and women alike: you are in the best possible hands.

Travelling while on prescribed treatment? Here’s what you need to know.

Whether you’ve got a weekend away or an overseas adventure planned, there’s no reason your health plans need to be put on hold while you travel.

One of the most common questions I hear before people head off is how to manage their prescribed treatment on the road — and with a little preparation, it’s usually straightforward.

A few key things to keep in mind:
• Check your medicine’s label and CMI (Consumer Medicine Information) before you go — storage requirements can vary between products, including temperature limits and how long it can be kept out of the fridge.
• Keep prescribed items in your carry-on where possible (it helps avoid temperature extremes and lost luggage).
• Bring your treatment in its original packaging with the pharmacy label, so it’s clearly prescribed to you.
• If you’re travelling internationally, a brief doctor’s letter can be useful for peace of mind, and your pharmacist can also advise on practical travel tips.

If you’re unsure about what’s best for your individual plan while travelling, check in with your prescriber or pharmacist before you fly.

General information only — not personal medical advice.

Meet Olga — your health coach at Alevia.

Weight loss is rarely a straight line, and it was never meant to be navigated alone.

Olga's role is to walk alongside you through the real challenges — the social situations, the setbacks, the moments when motivation dips and old habits feel louder than your goals. She's here to help you find practical strategies, stay connected to your why, and get back on track without judgment when life gets in the way.

Because that's what genuine support looks like. Not a plan handed to you and a wave goodbye — but a real person in your corner, helping you build sustainable habits and consistency over time.

If you've tried going it alone and found it harder than it should be, that's not unusual. It's human. And it's exactly why we built a team around you.

Watch Olga's introduction and learn more about the role a health coach can play as part of a supportive care team.

World Obesity Day 2026: 8 Billion Reasons to Act
Today marks World Obesity Day, and this year's theme couldn't be more urgent. With credible projections (e.g., World Obesity Federation) indicating that half the global population may be living with overweight or obesity by 2035, it's clear we need a fundamentally different approach.

At Alevia, we've always understood what the evidence continues to show: obesity is not a failure of willpower. It's a complex, chronic medical condition shaped by genetics, environment, food systems, marketing, stress, sleep, medications, and countless other factors beyond individual control.
The narrative needs to shift. This isn't about personal blame or quick fixes. It's about acknowledging that our food environments, healthcare systems, and social structures need to change. It's about recognising that people living with obesity deserve compassionate, evidence-based medical care—not judgment.

This is why we approach weight management as a medical partnership. Our patients aren't looking for magic solutions; they're seeking expert support to navigate a condition that affects every aspect of health. They deserve access to comprehensive, multidisciplinary care that addresses the biological, psychological, and environmental factors at play.

As we mark this day, we recommit to our mission: providing stigma-free, evidence-based obesity medicine. Because every person—every one of those 8 billion reasons—deserves respectful care, sustainable solutions, and hope grounded in medical science.
If you've been searching for a different approach to weight management, one built on partnership rather than shame, we're here.

Meet Olga Wheeler, our newest addition to the Alevia team.

As a health coach, Olga’s role is a little different from our GPs and allied health clinicians — she’s the person in your corner between appointments, helping you work through the real-life barriers that can get in the way of change.

Because we know sustainable weight support isn’t just about the clinical side of things. It’s about having the right support around you.

Olga understands the path isn’t always straightforward. Life gets complicated, motivation fluctuates, and old habits can be stubborn. Her job is to help you navigate all of that — with encouragement, practical strategies, and ongoing support tailored to you.

This is what a multidisciplinary approach looks like in practice: a whole team working together to support every part of your care.

We’re so glad to have her on board. Watch the video to hear from Olga herself.
