Weight loss medications can be genuinely effective. A script on its own is not a treatment plan.

I want to be direct about this, because I am seeing more patients come through having accessed medication online without any baseline assessment, monitoring, or support - and some of them are experiencing the consequences.

The clinical risks of unsupported prescribing are real. Significant muscle loss, because without adequate protein guidance and resistance exercise, a meaningful proportion of weight lost can come from lean mass rather than fat. Nutritional deficiencies that accumulate unnoticed. Side effects that escalate because there is no clinician reviewing them. And when the medication eventually stops, weight often returns quickly because nothing has been done to address the underlying drivers or build the habits that make progress sustainable.

The medication is one part of a complete clinical picture. The assessment that should come before it, the monitoring, the nutritional and behavioural support, the work on what is actually driving the weight - that is the part that makes it safe and worth doing.

If you are considering weight loss medication, start with a proper clinical assessment.

Something our Mental Health Consultant, Heather Mikronis, says that we think more people need to hear:
“You don’t need fixing. You’re not broken. There’s nothing wrong with you.”

At Alevia, compassion is central to how we support people in our care.

Many people come to us carrying years of self-blame — feeling as though they should have been able to “just try harder.” But weight is complex. It can be influenced by biology, life experiences, health, and environment.

That’s why our team includes GPs, dietitians, exercise physiologists, health coaches and mental health support as part of a multidisciplinary approach.

If self-criticism has been part of your experience, it may be worth asking what could change if your health was approached with more compassion. That’s something we can explore together.

What happens when treatment stops?
It’s a question more people should be asking — and one worth answering honestly.

For many people, long-term results depend on what is built alongside treatment: sustainable eating habits, regular movement, strength training, and the right clinical support over time.

That’s why we focus on the full picture at Alevia. Not just one part of care, but the education, support and long-term plan that help patients work toward healthier habits they can maintain.

If your current care feels rushed or one-dimensional, it may be worth asking what your long-term plan looks like.

One challenge many people experience during weight management treatment is eating well when appetite is low.
Reduced appetite can make it harder to meet your nutrition needs, which is why practical support matters.
Our dietitian Sarah shares three simple strategies that may help:
✔ Small, regular meals built around protein and fibre
✔ Eating to a routine, rather than relying only on hunger cues
✔ Using nourishing liquid options when solid food feels difficult
This is part of the support our multidisciplinary team provides at Alevia — practical, personalised guidance to help you stay well supported throughout care.
Watch Sarah’s full tips in the video.

What does a healthy relationship with food actually look like?

Dr Hilda Jessop, one of our GPs at Alevia, puts it simply — and it’s worth sitting with.
It’s not about eating perfectly. It’s about building a more settled, sustainable relationship with food over time. For many people, that means less guilt, less all-or-nothing thinking, and more support to understand the factors influencing eating behaviours and weight.
Many people who come to Alevia feel stuck in a frustrating cycle around food and weight. At Alevia, we take a holistic, medically guided approach that considers physical, behavioural and psychological factors.

Our GPs work alongside dietitians, psychologists, and health coaches because weight management is not one-size-fits-all. Care is tailored to the individual and may include a range of treatment approaches, depending on clinical needs.

If you’re looking for evidence-based support with weight management, our team is here to help.

Appetite changes during treatment can make it easier to eat less than your body needs.

When overall intake drops, nutrition matters. Low protein intake and poor dietary quality can contribute to symptoms like low energy, fatigue, and changes to hair health.

That’s why weight management should look at more than the number on the scale. Ongoing clinical review and nutrition support can help protect overall health during treatment.

At Alevia, our dietitians work alongside our doctors as part of a broader, medically supervised program focused on both weight management and wellbeing.

If you’re concerned about your nutrition, energy levels, or symptoms during treatment, speak with your GP or treating clinician.

Preserving muscle during medically supervised weight loss matters.

When people lose weight, the goal is not just change on the scale. Protecting lean muscle mass is important for physical function, metabolic health, and long-term weight management.

That’s why a comprehensive weight-management plan should include medical assessment, nutrition support, and an appropriate exercise program tailored to the individual.

At Alevia, our approach focuses on evidence-based, multidisciplinary care, with treatment plans designed around each patient’s clinical needs. Treatment suitability is determined by the treating doctor after appropriate assessment.

If you’re exploring medical treatment options for obesity, speak with your treating doctor about how muscle health can be supported during care.

Sometimes appetite is only one part of the picture.

Eating isn’t always driven by hunger alone. We also eat for reward, for comfort, for connection. And for many people, things like ADHD or binge eating disorder may be quietly influencing the urge to eat — even when appetite feels more manageable.

That’s why medication alone rarely tells the whole story.

When appetite changes, the quality of what you eat becomes even more important. Without the right nutrition support built into the plan, progress can feel frustratingly slow — and that’s not a willpower problem. It’s often a sign that something in the approach is missing.

If it feels like something isn’t working, there may be more going on beneath the surface. A doctor-led weight management plan that looks at the full picture — your history, behaviours, mental health and nutrition — can help identify what’s missing and build a plan that moves you forward.

Weight loss is about much more than what happens on the scales.

For many people, the harder part of the journey can be the emotional side of change — the patterns, habits and feelings that sit beneath eating behaviours and self-worth.

That’s why I’m pleased to be bringing back our Reclaiming Self Monthly Art Therapy Group at Alevia for a second series.

Led by Zeva, a qualified art therapist and senior mental health peer support worker, this is a supportive online space for people exploring the emotional side of their health journey. No artistic ability is needed — the focus is on reflection and expression, not performance.

Each monthly session explores a different theme across six sessions:

Sunday 13 April — Foundations: Establishing Safe Space & Self-Exploration
Monday 11 May — Worth & Confidence
Sunday 29 June — Emotional Eating & the Inner Void
Monday 13 July — Soothing Without Food
Monday 10 August — Values, Meaning & Motivation
Monday 14 September — Connection, Growth & Reflection

Sessions are online and $49 each. You’re welcome to attend the sessions that feel relevant to you — there’s no need to commit to the full series.
