Weight loss medications can be genuinely effective. A script on its own is not a treatment plan.
I want to be direct about this, because I am seeing more patients come through having accessed medication online without any baseline assessment, monitoring, or support - and some of them are experiencing the consequences.
The clinical risks of unsupported prescribing are real. Significant muscle loss, because without adequate protein guidance and resistance exercise, a meaningful proportion of weight lost can come from lean mass rather than fat. Nutritional deficiencies that accumulate unnoticed. Side effects that escalate because there is no clinician reviewing them. And when the medication eventually stops, weight often returns quickly because nothing has been done to address the underlying drivers or build the habits that make progress sustainable.
The medication is one part of a complete clinical picture. The assessment that should come before it, the monitoring, the nutritional and behavioural support, the work on what is actually driving the weight - that is the part that makes it safe and worth doing.
If you are considering weight loss medication, start with a proper clinical assessment.
