Let’s talk about Lasagne!

I’ve made heaps of them lately, with and for the people I support (and for my own family). It’s a great meal to feed a whole family, or portion and freeze for easy winter dinners.

I’m not one for following a recipe and no two lasagnes are the same. Lately I’ve made everything from low fodmap, veggie lasagne, gluten free and vegan, and one made purely from ingredients sourced from our local food relief. I modify everything to suit the needs of those that will be eating it.

No lasagnes this week though. This week I changed a shower head, supported exercise, gardened, helped with life admin and made soup. Never a dull day in the life of a support worker!

Last week in Walhalla 😍

If you’ve never been or you haven’t been for a while, I recommend a visit. It’s extra beautiful at this time of year. What are you waiting for?

Last week’s little adventure - I got to support a family on a fun day out at
I’ve been lucky enough to be apart of this family’s memory making for more than 2 years now. I love seeing the joy on the kids faces as they push themselves and overcome challenges.

Perks of the job 🤩

I’ve been helping a client purchase a car today (Did you know i worked in the car industry in a past life?) and the sales office was stocked with complimentary chocolates.

How many do you think I had?

Last month marked Two years since I began Connections to Recovery.

Two of the wonderful people I support have been with me since the very beginning while others come and go.

Whether it’s for a short time or a long time, offering mental health and wellbeing support to people who need it is a rewarding ‘job’ that rarely feels like work. I never know what tomorrow will bring, what adventure we’ll be going on, or what challenge we’ll be working together to overcome.

Maybe sometime in the next two years I’ll get better at storytelling and sharing on social media 🤷‍♀️

Yesterday I visited in Lang Lang for a fun activity of making a fairy garden.

Fairy Linny ran the activity in costume and entertained the kids with all her usual energy. She’s also a fab support worker (with or without the costume!)

Four C’s is a welcoming space that promotes inclusion and celebrates all abilities while connecting communities and serving great coffee. What a slice of heaven!

Yes she can!

We recently had some pretty severe weather here in Gippsland. It left much of our region without power.

When I arrived to support my client, they were distressed to find that when the power returned a surge of water had blown open a fitting on the water heater. They had to turn the water off as it was flooding out from the broken fitting. After a couple of days without power, now having no water was pretty overwhelming.

In the current economic climate, calling a plumber is a luxury many can’t afford. I assessed the problem and decided it was doable. Got out some tools, got some advice from a friendly young plumber who just happened to be at the local hardware at the same time as me, and by lunch time my client had water again!

When I turn up to support a person we don’t always follow the plan. Whatever is bothering them today, causing overwhelm, stress or worry, that’s what we tackle.

*of course I won’t do any work that should be done by a licensed professional, but I’ll do pretty much anything else!

The last week has been a real mixed bag of activities.

In amongst the usual stuff I’ve supported some wonderful people to do the things they’ve been dreaming of. From the library , to musical theatre and on to getting new piercings

If you can dream it we can do it!

I’d like to give a special mention to Elly who without prompt, recognised and accommodated the individual needs of the person I was supporting. This isn’t always the case but Elly was exceptional.

What other businesses have been awesome at accommodating community members with additional needs? I’d love to support them.

Certificates on the wall ✅

These came in the mail while I was away and today I popped them in some frames - Occupying the space that was once 15 months worth of class schedules.

I’m still studying. I’m mid way through a Diploma in Counselling where I’m learning skills that help me support those who need it.

A bit of weekend prep work for a session in the coming week.

One of the people I support wants to do some knitting. I’m pretty competent with a crochet hook but I never really took to knitting so I need some pre-planning here.
With a little help from YouTube I’ve got the basics and I’m getting some practice in before I help a wonderful human make something special for herself.
(It’s the gifting to ourselves that’s key here 😉)

Swipe across to see a blanket I crocheted for daughter no.3 before she was born.

I've been collaborating with .forchoice to put together the next Gippsland Provider's Squad event. This time we've created an online space for knowledge sharing with a panel of legends who are generously giving their time to strengthen our industry.

We have for marketing and social media support, bringing a wealth of knowledge from her background as an LAC and Support Coordinator as well as many years successfully running her own business, and Stacey Hakvoort from for all the financial stuff we need to know.

We'd love to fill all the places for this event. Please share it with anyone who works or runs a business in the NDIS sector.

The event is next Wednesday evening. You can book your place and submit your questions for the panel using this link - https://forms.gle/jkSU8HpT95ScZw5P6

I often get asked what I do in my role as a support person.

I've found it hard to tell the story of what I do on public platforms like this. Most of what happens in my work day is private, it's in the lives and the homes of the people I work with and I won't share their images. So here's a snippet of the last few weeks - using stock images from Canva!

I've helped clients to clean and organise their spaces including garages, cars and linen cupboards. I've made lots of drop-offs at the op-shop.
I've provided transport and attended medical appointments.
I've been on walks, I've been bowling (I won) and I've played mini golf (I didn't win).
I helped a person install a security camera, another needed help to clean out their vacuum so it worked more efficiently and I helped a person troubleshoot a dysfunctional washing machine!
I've cared for dogs and cats as well as people.
I've done lots of gardening including weeding and planting.
I've shopped and cooked with and for my clients.

I might complete a task with them, support them to learn, or sometimes I do the task for them. Whichever is most appropriate at the time.

What I do, is make the person's day a little easier or a little brighter.
Maybe the question should be "What don't I do?"
