Any Port Mac or Wauchope locals looking for a last minute Chrissy gift?

My daughter, Alexi, has been creating a small shop as part of her home learning and has some beautiful gift bags ready to go if anyone is keen.

Pick up in King Creek or we can deliver to Wauchope or Port this evening for an extra $2 ☺️🎄

As the year comes to a close and Christmas draws near, this season invites us to slow down.

To reflect on the year that was.
To spend time with friends and loved ones - or step back and enjoy some quiet moments.

It’s okay to skip events, keep things simple, or let go of the pressure for perfect wrapping and plans.

This week we wrapped up our final School Prep group session for the year.
It’s been great to see the children build confidence and familiarity with group routines over the term.

Across sessions we focused on things like following visual schedules, moving between activities, managing transitions, taking turns, and practising independence within a small group.

We also spent time supporting regulation and comfort in shared spaces - skills that can make a big difference when starting school.

A big well done to everyone who took part, and good luck to everyone heading off to big school next year!

Christmas can be full of sparkle and excitement - and it can also be a lot.

More noise, more people, more change, more expectations.
If your child (or you) finds it tricky, that makes sense. These simple supports can help everyone stay regulated and actually enjoy the moments that matter

When we say “heavy work”, we mean activities that give the muscles and joints strong, deep pressure.

Think pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying - the kind of effort where your body really has to work.

Why do we use it?

* It can help children feel calmer and more settled
* It builds body awareness - knowing where their body is in space
* It can support strength, focus, and “getting the wiggles out”

A few easy heavy work ideas:

* Pushing a loaded wheelbarrow
* Carrying buckets of water or sand
* Animal walks (bear, crab, commando crawl)
* A simple tug of war with a rope

These can all be woven into everyday play, without needing special equipment.

Salt Dough Nature Prints

This is an easy Christmas activity to set up at home. Make a batch of salt dough, then press leaves, gum nuts, or small flowers into the surface before baking.

It’s a calm, hands-on way for children to explore patterns and textures, and the finished ornaments make simple keepsakes or gifts.

No special materials needed, just a few things from the kitchen and whatever nature offers.

Salt dough recipe:
• 1 cup plain flour
• ½ cup salt
• ½ cup water (add slowly until smooth)

Roll it out, press your nature items in, and bake at 100-120°C for 2-3 hours until dry.

Our school prep group is off to a great start this term.

We’ve been using visual supports to help plan, communicate, and stay on track through each activity.

Simple tools like these make it easier for children to follow along, understand what’s happening next, and feel comfortable in the routine.

We’ve been hearing so many stories exactly like this one recently. As parents of children on the NDIS ourselves, it’s pretty scary to imagine being in that situation.

As a parent, being on the advocacy journey itself is hard to begin with, let alone now trying to plan for what feels so daunting and unpredictable.

Hopefully there is some change and understanding soon that allows families and the NDIS to find more common ground, as there is so much positive potential.

Until then, sing out to the people around you. Most of the time there’s nothing about the situation that can be fixed straight away but sometimes having some validation and feeling a little less alone can help get you through the day.

As more and more of us struggle with plan cuts and changes, this is especially important. Even on the most challenging day, if nothing else, remember that you’re not alone.
