Much to our disappointment, from the 1st of November, the government is pushing ahead with big cutbacks to mental health rebates for patients. This means that you will get a lower rebate from Medicare when you attend your GP for a mental health plan review.

To help maximise the rebates for our patients at Sage Medical, we are expanding our patient’s access to Chronic Condition Management Plans for eligible patients. These plans will allow you access to higher Medicare rebates when you’re registered with our practice through MyMedicare.

Register today via the link below to access higher rebates from tomorrow:

Meningitis cases are rising all across Australia this year, with 56 cases so far. Winter and Spring are the peak time for meningitis cases every year. Notably, four cases have been reported in Victoria in the last four weeks alone, three of which have been in the 0-4years age group.

Given the rapid progression and potentially devastating consequences of Meningococcal B disease, prevention remains a key priority.

Meningitis B can affect individuals of any age, but those at highest risk include infants under 1 year, children aged 1-4 years, followed by adolescents/young adults aged 15-24 years.

Please consider booking your children with our nurses at Sage Medical for a Meningococcal B (Bexsero) vaccine, in addition to their government funded vaccines. Vaccination can play a vital role in protecting against this disease.

Bookings can be made either online at https://sagemedical.au/ or by calling 03 8606 3206.

Last Friday night, we said goodbye to a couple of our original staff members at Sage Medical and officially welcomed some new faces to the team.

Lots of fun was had by all, so much so that these were the only 2 photos that we could find that were suitable to post on our socials!

🎨🍷 Paintbrushes, laughter, and a splash of wine!

We had a fantastic Friday evening unleashing our inner Picassos at our Paint & Sip night. A little bit of silliness, a whole lot of creativity, and some serious team bonding.
What a special bunch of people to wind down the week with!

In Australia, there are several models of antenatal care. Which you chose may depend on whether or not you have Medicare or top level Private Health Insurance as well as personal preference. The options include; obstetrician care, midwifery care and GP Antenatal Shared Care.

What is GP Antenatal Shared Care?

This is when antenatal care is shared between the antenatal department at your local public hospital and an accredited shared care general practitioner. GP Antenatal Shared Care is suitable for low risk, singleton pregnancies with no anticipated medical or obstetric issues.

Approximately 1/3 of your visits are with a midwife at the hospital and approximately 2/3 are held with your GP in primary care. In addition you will have several ultrasound scans at a sonography provider.
When you go into labour, you deliver at the hospital.

What are the advantages of GP ANSC?

- lower cost compared to obstetrician only care
- more convenient and usually much less time consuming appointments compared to the public hospital outpatient department
- GP is able to manage full range of health issues not just the pregnancy and prescribe if needed.

At Sage Medical, Dr Tara Hillen, Dr Sarah Metcalfe and Dr Kirsten Henderson are all accredited antenatal shared care providers and love supporting women through their pregnancy journeys. To make a booking, either call our reception team on: 03 8606 3206, or, hop online at https://sagemedical.au/.

The RSV vaccine is now available at Sage Medical for all women between 28-36 weeks pregnant. The vaccine is free and can be administered by our experienced nurse, Veronica and Di. The ideal time to have the vaccine is at the same time as your whooping cough vaccine.

RSV rates are continuing to skyrocket across Australia, with over 165,910 recorded last year, compared to 128,117 in the entirety of 2023, and 95,959 in 2022.

In Australia, severe RSV infections are responsible for around 12,000 babies being admitted to hospital each year, with around half of notifications among children aged under five, and infants under six months at greatest risk.

Of the cases recorded in 2024, 49.5% were in children under four years old, and a further 8.5% were in children aged between five and nine.

Maternal immunisation reduces the risk of severe RSV disease in infants less than six months of age by around 70%.

Please call us to make your booking on 03 8606 3206, or pop online to https://sagemedical.au/ and select a nurse immunisation appointment.

Asthma and Allergy Plans

- Remember to book your children in for their GP appointments to have these updated for 2025!

It’s back to school and kinder time (which brings a welcome sigh of relief for many of us!).
However, this also means that it if your child suffers from asthma or allergies, that it is time to update your child’s annual management plan.

This plan needs to be completed by your GP and is typically valid for 12 months. Your school or childcare will need a copy of their plan and any medication that they would be expected to their staff to administer to your child if needed e.g. inhalers, anti-histamines or epipens.

Templates for these plans are typically available either from your school office or GP clinic.
